With expertise in PVC, wood, chain link and steel, USA Fence Company has been a leader in fencing and barricade contracting for 44 years. Headquartered in Bradenton, Florida, the business manages branch offices in Bradenton, Englewood, Lakeland and Tampa, Florida.
Founded in 1971 by L.H. “Butch” Glasgow, USA Fence began with just two people and has grown to 70 full-time, in-house employees, partnering with approximately 40 subcontractors throughout the state. Since its inception, USA Fence has been family-owned and -operated. While the company is able to construct a high-quality fence matching the client’s needs, USA Fence can also act as a consultant to guide the customer through the fence-building process.
In addition to fence construction, USA Fence has gained success over the years by diversifying its services to meet the needs of its clients. The company also performs demolition and operates a dumpster company that covers an area of approximately 40 miles. USA Fence rents barricades as well, which it has supplied for presidential inaugurations as well as visits from the Pope.
Distinct clientele
A notable project that USA Fence was involved in was the Boston Red Sox spring training facility in Fort Myers, Florida. Designed to replicate Fenway Park, the facility sits on 106 acres of land and has six full-sized practice fields. The most notable feature is the 37-foot chain-link fence that USA Fence installed in left field known as the “Green Monster.” Nearly a football field in length, a five-man crew worked on-site for four weeks to complete the $200,000 project.
In January 2015, USA Fence was involved in constructing a wildlife underpass along Interstate 4 in Daytona Beach. Since the widening of the stretch of highway from Deland, Florida, to Daytona Beach, the state of Florida has seen a number of wildlife deaths from animals crossing the Interstate. Not only does the underpass create safety measures for animals, but also for motorists. The project includes approximately five miles of fencing that “bear proofs” both sides of Interstate 4 and also leads creatures to three large underpasses, as well as five smaller crossings.
In completing these projects, USA Fence utilizes its fleet of more than 90 vehicles and its strong network of subcontractors and suppliers. “We are capable of performing any of the jobs in-house, but sometimes it is more efficient for us and the client to hire subs,” says Glasgow. “Typically it’s only the larger jobs that we sub out. As far as suppliers, we have a pretty set network, but we do occasionally branch out to new partners.”
A progressive and innovative company
After 44 years in business, USA Fence continues to progress and innovate, which is a practice that has been largely responsible for the company’s longevity. “We are working on a program now where we equip our employees with tablets,” says Cody Glasgow, quality control director for USA Fence. “It will revolutionize the data flow, which is key for successful companies.”
The decision of which technologies to apply to an operation largely depends on the potential for return on investment. This is where the training of employees is crucial to the success of the implementation. “The training with the tablets will be extensive,” says Glasgow. “You have to make the time investment. It is a misconception that everyone knows how to pick up a tablet or a smartphone and use it to its full capacity.”
Glasgow says that it is important to implement new technology for not only efficiency on the job site, but also for attracting a younger generation of employees. “The millennials will appreciate the new technology,” he adds. “With the rate of technological expansion, the younger generation will already possess knowledge of the tools even if they don’t have as much field experience. It will certainly be a recruiting tool as the millennials do not want to join companies that are archaic.”
In addition to providing high-quality solutions for its clients, USA Fence is an active member of its communities and the company strongly believes in giving back. The company has donated its services to many nonprofit organizations and schools. USA Fence also offers a 3 percent military discount to support the men and women who have served the country in the armed services. In recognition of its charitable work, Manatee County’s prestigious Hernando de Soto Historical Society presented USA Fence with the Mary Parker Local Philanthropy Award, which has only been awarded four times since its inception in 1991.
Transitioning into 2016 means more growth for USA Fence. The company is looking to expand its reach and continue to add new branches throughout Florida. Building upon its rich history, USA Fence Company will remain a standard in quality and customer service.
