Founded by brothers Charles and Frank Urata, Urata Concrete began with a $100 investment, an old pickup truck and the guidance of their father, Sofio Urata. Through commitment, dedication and hard work Charles and Frank built a company that became well-known in the residential market. In 1985, the company had established a strong enough reputation to leave the residential sector and solidify itself in the commercial market as a union contractor with diverse capabilities.

Since its inception, the team at Urata Concrete has mastered the skills required to provide unmatched results. The company specializes in a wide range of concrete services to handle all types of commercial, industrial and public works projects. The company’s skilled professionals have decades of combined hands-on experience in the industry and utilize modern technology and methods to ensure that every project is completed on schedule, under budget and beyond expectation.

With a vast array of services and specialties, Urata Concrete is able to complete projects of all shapes and sizes. The company often works with numerous clients from various backgrounds. “We do a lot of public works projects, but we do a lot of private work as well,” says Kelly Urata, chief financial officer of Urata Concrete, and daughter of Charlie. “We have been in business for more than 40 years and have continued to change and develop. We also have a large bonding capacity, which helps us to be able to bid the larger, more complex projects.”

High-profile clients

A notable, upscale project that Urata Concrete has been working on is the new arena that will host the Sacramento Kings NBA basketball team. Urata Concrete’s scope of work includes installing floor slabs, interstitial stone fill and superstructure concrete walls. To alleviate traffic congestion while working in an active city, all of Urata Concrete’s major concrete pours and base rock installation work was performed at night. “We worked on an accelerated schedule to stay on schedule for the projected opening date in the fall of 2016,” says Kelly. “It has been a really big and interesting project for us.”

A strong market

Kelly says that Urata Concrete has been benefiting from the heavy activity and redevelopment projects that are taking place in the Bay Area. “Approximately 80 percent of our work has been in the Bay Area,” she says. “There has been a lot of new housing and new shopping centers.” She also notes that the company has seen more private work, which includes four warehouse construction projects with which Urata Concrete is involved.

In the past year, Urata Concrete has grown its operation to approximately 170 employees, as well as expanded its office in Oakland, California. As the company steadily grows, advancements in technology have become more prevalent in the industry. Urata Concrete maintains a competitive edge by incorporating the latest software such as building information modeling (BIM) into its field operations. Included in the new positions within the company is a full-time detailer who ensures that all implements of technology are supervised and employees are adept at all functions. “We provide group and one-on-one training for all technological aspects,” says Kelly. “It’s so important because it improves construction quality and assists in the planning phases.”
