MaCon Supply Inc.

Proudly Serving the Construction Industry

Thomas Moffet founded MaCon Supply Inc. (MaCon) in 1976 with the help of Marv Ostrum. The pair started small in a single location, supplying local contractors involved in masonry and concrete work, and the company has been growing for over 35 years.

Today a team of over 50 employees operates eight stores across a broad service area. Blake Moffet, Thomas’s son and vice president of operations at MaCon, is getting ready to take over the business, while Blake’s son, Preston, is already involved as the third generation. Like his father before him, Preston has worked his way up from the warehouse and now to front desk sales by learning about products and applications. This ensures Preston can offer valuable information to customers.

While the business has changed greatly since opening its doors, consistent quality and customer service continue to draw customers. “We always try to carry the top, most respected brands,” says Blake. “We have a very experienced staff and many of them have been with us for more than 20 years. We’re the leading source for concrete and masonry supplies in Montana and our service area extends into Wyoming and North Dakota.

Products and Services

MaCon offers a broad range of products to suit customer needs. Materials and equipment are available from a number of leading manufacturers. The company is a certified distributor of Hilti and Incom products, among others. The customer base includes general contractors, masons and do-it-yourselfers looking for top-of-the-line materials.

One of the greatest indicators of the business’ success, according to Blake, is seeing generations of customers come through the door. “We have contractors who come in where we sold to the fathers and now we sell to the kids,” he explains.

In 2009 the Moffet family invested in a new facility in Billings, Mont. The building, custom-built for the family business, incorporates many of the latest and most popular materials that are in high demand for the industry. MaCon had a unique opportunity to showcase its inventory. While organized product and building displays are important to running a successful retail business, MaCon managed to display products in a memorable, realistic format by using its products to build the store.

“We always look at some new ideas and different products,” Blake told a local newspaper shortly after the location opened. “Many of the contractors around here are looking for new ideas, and we wanted to incorporate some of them into our building.”

Many new products incorporate green design principles, and MaCon’s new store reflects that trend. Tilt-up concrete construction receives high insulation ratings. Skylights and reflective quartz flooring take advantage of natural sunlight, which reduces electricity costs. Motion detectors turn off lights when employees leave a room.

Sustainable Growth

With new facilities popping up on occasion, MaCon remains stable. “The economic perils of ’09 and ’10 were tricky,” notes Blake. “We survived. If you can survive out here in this economy, it means you are doing something right.” MaCon is one of only a few suppliers in Montana with a large inventory and multiple locations, giving the team a competitive advantage. Still, Blake and the team are cautiously optimistic about the future. “It’s hard to say if things are getting better or worse,” explains Blake. “We’re really the only people in the state doing what we do. Things are definitely better than they were a couple of years ago. It’s been a gradual change, but the economy seems to be improving.”

Blake and the MaCon team have not set any definite plans for expansion, but a trend of growth has certainly emerged. The current service area spans roughly 1,000 miles by 1,000 miles, and the word is getting out about MaCon. The business will soon have a change in leadership, too, as Blake takes the reins from his father.

“I’ve been in the industry my whole life,” explains Blake. “This is a family business.” And MaCon looks like it will stay that way. As Preston gets older, his involvement in the family business is to become greater as well. Blake doesn’t say for sure whether his son will take over someday, but it may be possible if all things go well.

After three generations and several decades, MaCon has made an impact as the largest independent construction supplier in Montana. Time will tell how large the family business grows. As the economy regains momentum, MaCon will have a growing number of new construction projects to supply. Reliable service and leading products have made a reputation for the family business. A continued commitment to both, as well as solid customer and supplier relationships will ensure decades of knowledgeable service from the family and employees at MaCon Supply Inc.
