Four generations of service in California

For nearly four decades, Valley Unique Electric Inc. has specialized in just about every type of service offered in the electrical industry. Located in Fresno, California, Valley Unique excels in the industrial-commercial field of construction-maintenance and design-build through its dedication to innovation and commitment to customer service.

Founded in 1979 by Walt Worthington and Hogi Selling III, Valley Unique began as a light fixture showroom before entering the contracting side of things. Today, the founders’ sons are running the business with Walt and Hogi providing consulting services. Mark Worthington, son of Walt, is the Valley’s CEO while Hogi Selling IV serves as president.

After graduating from California State University – Fresno with a degree in industrial technology, Mark joined Valley Unique in 1986. As a principal design-build consultant, Mark oversees the design-build process from start to finish. He is also one of the chief estimators for both private and public projects.

Hogi joined Valley Unique in 1993 and oversees the hiring and management of new employees, project development, estimating and contractor and supplier relationships. Hogi is affiliated with the San Joaquin Electric League and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.

Valley Unique has established a strong reputation over the years through its dedication to innovation and customer service. With the a skilled team of technicians, Valley Unique possesses the capability to complete projects of all scopes and sizes in commercial, industrial, telecommunication VDV and fire alarm specifics.

Adapting to change

With the constant ebb and flow of the construction industry, Valley Unique maintains the ability to adapt by diversifying its markets and services. In 2009, the company became associated with the REPOWER Fresno franchise, which allows Valley Unique to offer innovative and economical solar solutions to homeowners and commercial property owners that help to reduce or eliminate electrical bills. Through REPOWER Fresno’s nationwide network, Valley Unique is able to offer customers the highest quality products available at an affordable cost through the power of volume purchasing.

Covering the Central Valley, Valley Unique was primarily focused on the residential sector when it became a REPOWER Fresno franchise. The solar division’s target market became the commercial sector due to tax rebates that property owners are receiving. “We’ve done a lot of car ports,” says Mark. “Many property owners decide to couple that with solar power, which creates tax incentives for the owner. There are also a significant amount of farmers in the Central Valley area who are always looking for some tax credit.”

Valley Unique has recently been working with the California Highway Patrol as it adds new facilities throughout the state. “They are all design-build systems,” says Mark. “We’re doing a few of them right now and a couple of them are in the works for the near future.”

Valley Unique was also recently involved the construction of the Parkway Trails Shopping Center, in northeast Fresno. Valley installed all underground utilities for the 122,000-square-foot facility, including Rule 20 and gas utilities. Installation work also included eight electrical rooms and 45 pole lights along with a fully-operational gas station. Valley Unique developed the Clovis Trail with 19 pedestrian lights as part of the development.

Moving forward

When it comes to measuring success, Mark and his team use numerous metrics to gauge the pulse of Valley Unique. Continual steady growth, paying bills and maintaining customer satisfaction remain staples in a successful company. While all of these points are important to the success of Valley Unique, Mark also likes looks deeper into the big picture of operating a business. “It’s very important to us to maintain strong relationships with our partners and making sure our employees are happy,” he shares. “You’re company is only as good as the people that you have in the field getting the job done. Good morale is the lifeblood to any company.”

Valley Unique is a company that continues to grow as its volume has increased annually since the recession. With baby boomers nearing retirement, the company is combatting the scarce labor pool by with the California-based Western Electrical Contractor Association apprenticeship program. “People will come to us that are new to the industry but are hardworking and wish to establish a career,” says Mark. “We’ll put them through the five-year program and train them in the way we operate. It’s an investment but prevents us from having to hire somebody off the street not fully knowing their capabilities.”
