Scott Pardee ventured out on his own in 2009 to establish Pardee Construction LLC (Pardee Construction) as the general contractor and construction management firm of choice in the Tulsa, Okla., area. The Pardee Construction team is committed to constructing every project with a philosophy that every structure should showcase masterful craftsmanship and deliver an end product that will stand the test of time. Pardee Construction achieves its goal of building with mastery by leveraging its employees’ extensive industry experience in the fast-paced commercial markets in Southern California, Nebraska, and currently in northeast Oklahoma. Clear communication and thoughtful coordination with project team members ensures every project’s goals are always a top priority and are delivered without discrepancies or disruptions.
Scott previously worked as a project engineer at both the large national firm Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and catered to high-end real estate development firms while employed by Snyder Langston. Scott’s expertise is further underscored by the professional success of Jeromy Robinson, a Pardee Construction project superintendent, who contributes 12 years of industry experience working on projects as large as the $223 million BOK Center Arena & Tulsa Convention Center. Drawing on all internal resources, Pardee Construction institutes jobsite leadership and manages all carefully vetted subcontractors to provide clients with the gamut of construction management, general contracting, design-build and energy-efficient metal building services.
“We’re also involved with the U.S. Green Building Council [USGBC], and we want to be part of a strong push for sustainability in our market,” adds Scott, managing member and owner of Pardee Construction. Scott recently became a LEED Green Associate (LEED GA) and joined the Tulsa chapter of the USGBC as a board member in 2011, boosting his company’s prowess on the sustainability front. The Pardee Construction team hopes to serve as an example of what value engineering and LEED building practices can do for Tulsa in the most tangible ways possible.
Leading Sustainability in Tulsa
Pardee Construction currently focuses on urban infill, small federal jobs and interior remodels, which the company can perform at very competitive process. The company has done several projects for clients such as Oklahoma University, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the City of Tulsa, and Pardee Construction is at the forefront of innovative construction within these sectors in its region.
“We’re in the process of finalizing construction on one of the most energy-efficient commercial buildings in the country,” asserts Scott. That building happens to be Pardee Construction’s new headquarters in Tulsa, which was designed internally to achieve LEED Gold certification under the Commercial Interiors guidelines. The project involves a major overhaul to an existing building, which will be outfitted with numerous energy-efficient envelope measures and state-of-the-art geothermal systems. The renovations will substantially reduce Pardee Construction’s energy costs, while also proving that sustainable, highly energy-efficient construction techniques can be inexpensively implemented. Sustainability is no longer considered a luxury because of Pardee Construction’s techniques.
“We have actually seen a bit of resistance to the LEED movement here in Oklahoma, with some actually condemning the program,” expands Scott. “But we want to prove that adopting LEED design principles and sustainability into a project doesn’t actually cost more and can actually save the client money in the long run.”
To that end, Pardee Construction has amassed a network of local partners in sustainable building. Whereas many of plants required for a vegetative roof would be easier to bring in from a bigger city such as Chicago or even Seattle, Pardee Construction is able to find a local nursery to supply the products, cutting costs significantly, according to Scott. Always looking to reinforce its own mastery of innovative procedures, Pardee Construction opted to work directly with a mechanical consultant on its building and pursue LEED certification by assuming the roles of systems designer, LEED administrator and primary contractor. Pardee Construction opted to leverage its own internal resources to save money on the components it could self-perform.
It’s Pardee Time
Even if the state government hasn’t formally adopted LEED building practices or energy-efficiency guidelines into its building codes, Pardee Construction hopes to help clients navigate the vast array of options available to boost a project’s sustainability, whether or not it pursues LEED certification. Pardee Construction is a registered and authorized dealer of Rigid Global Products, an international manufacturer of metal building systems designed to be easily integrated with crystalline solar panels and laminate solar panels. In 2011 Pardee Construction also recycled above 95 percent of all of its waste generated on site across all projects, according to Scott, who plans to bolster this positive trend, among others.
“My goal is to grow this company to the $15 million annual revenue neighborhood with 50 percent of our business related to sustainability,” asserts Scott. To that end, Pardee Construction has already begun a mini publicity campaign. Pardee Construction hosted an industry-wide event in 2010 to mix with the area’s local architectural talent and building owners and generate more enthusiasm for sustainable building practices on the local level, and the company is hosting a similar event in October 2012.
Meanwhile, Scott is gearing up to grow the company with a healthy backlog of projects for a variety of commercial and intuitional customers. He is also considering hiring another couple of project superintendents to facilitate responsible growth without compromising the company’s commitment to delivering projects on time and under budget. Whether or not Oklahoma generates enough support to pass more ambitious energy codes, Pardee Construction LLC will help build momentum for sustainable building practices by proving environmentally conscious construction can be achieved without having to dig deep into the pocketbook.
