Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates Inc.
The team of skilled professionals at Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates Inc. (NBWW) has established the architecture studio as a leader in the planning and design of mixed-use centers and world-class hotels and resorts, as well as high-end commercial and retail projects. This workforce, which averages around 25, works to enact all projects in a timely, sophisticated manner, generating impressive results in a longstanding tradition of excellence.
NBWW was founded in 1967 in Coral Gables, Fla., by John R. Nichols, the company’s current CEO. Since then, NBWW has been involved with the planning and design of over $3 billion in new construction and renovations totaling 35,000 hotel rooms. Currently run by President Bruce Brosch, who joined the firm in 1979, NBWW offers potential clients a full array of architectural and planning services in the design of hotels, resorts, condo/hotels, office buildings, retail and mixed-use projects throughout the United States, Caribbean, Mexico and Latin America.
NBWW holds all the architectural design in-house, and brings in strategic structural engineering and interior design partners early in pre-construction meetings to allow for addressing project owners needs while controlling costs. NBWW’s well-rounded expertise allows the firm to deliver floor plans that are efficient but include edgy details, and this has attracted a lot of repeat clientele from the world of private development. One of the reasons for the company’s success is its adherence to its philosophy, which is outlined for potential clients on the company’s website, and reads as follows:
NBWW is committed to the philosophy that fine architecture may be art, but it must also relate to the human spirit. The company feels as though architecture must use innovative techniques in order to create a mood that unites with pragmatic function. The company’s objective is strictly to design a unique, high-quality project for each individual client that will ultimately produce a successful return on investment. NBWW steers its creativity toward innovative design while seeking the realities of the business community and real estate industry. The company prides itself on achieving the economic, marketing and aesthetic goals of all of its clients.
Redesign of a World-famous Hotel
The firm has designed over 150 hotels for some of the industry’s most prestigious names, including Hilton Hotels & Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton Hotels & Resorts and the Inter-Continental Hotels & Resorts to name a few. For example, NBWW was involved in the renovation of the famous Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Fla.
The hotel, which was originally designed by Morris Lapidus, has been featured in several motion pictures, and was the preferred destination for Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack when they reached Miami. The $1 billion renovation took two years to complete as the building was gutted to the studs and its 22-acre grounds were completely redesigned. Special care was taken to preserve many of the original design elements, including the “Staircase to Nowhere,” but NBWW’s designs called for two new towers with rooms that feature granite counters, walk-in-showers and separate jetted tubs, flat-screen TVs and an Apple computer. The computer is the centerpiece of the design of a “paperless” hotel; all guest correspondence is electronic.
NBWW was also involved in the planning and design of Starwood’s Luxury Collection on Singer Island, Fla. The hotel is the first to be built on the island in nearly 20 years. The 20-story Resort at Singer Island offers residences from $400,000 to more than $3 million with differing floor plans.
The resort combines a mix of 66 condominium residences and 239 resort units. The resort units, which compose the majority of The Resort at Singer Island, offer over a dozen different floor plan designs from which to choose. The units range from approximately 800 square feet to just over 1,750 square feet of living space and are sold fully furnished, featuring innovative plans capturing the expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. The acclaimed interior design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., created a selection of decorative schemes for the owner’s selection.
Aiding such ambitious projects is a reinvestment in firm resources, such as upgrading the office network and installing the latest in Building Information Modeling software to more efficiently quantify materials, square footage, and to avoid on-site conflicts before they cost time and money.
New Strategies Lead to New Stability
NBWW looks at the built environment as an opportunity to become informed by a neighborhood’s context, and in return improve the surrounding area for those who live, work or play within it. With this proactive attitude in play, and activity as far ranging as in Puerto Rico and Panama City, Panama, NBWW has brilliantly maneuvered through the obstacles that have arisen as a result of the recent economy.
Brosch outlines how NBWW continues to stay busy while other companies sit idle: “We learned the importance of diversification in terms of building types and locations. Currently, we’re focusing on Central and South America and other Spanish-speaking countries. Because of our hotel experience here in the U.S., I’m confident that we can take our design experience to other internationally based hotel companies.”
The company has a prominent reputation in the industry due to its high-quality work. With sound plans for the future paired with a portfolio teaming with spotlight projects, Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates Inc., is well positioned to retain its status of industry leadership.
