Innovative green products for floor to ceiling applications

Al Collison has been in the business of turning trash to treasure for several decades. Before founding MP Global Products LLC (MPG) in 1997, Collison manufactured cellulose insulation and used ground up newspapers to create sustainable products that help homes regulate heat.

When he established his new company, Collison kept with the same theme, only this time, he was looking for a way to use recycled materials as underlayment for flooring applications. He began by manufacturing carpet padding with a small team, creating recycled flooring products with remnant short fibers from the textile industry. After more than 15 years in business, MPG has diversified and now offers a range of interior products for new construction and renovation projects.

Collison currently employs around 100 people, including a skilled and experienced managing and marketing team. Among his trusted staff, Jack Boesch serves as the company’s director of marketing. Boesch signed on with the business in 1999 as Collison’s early lines were just getting off the ground. He has played a major role in promoting MPG’s strong line of green materials to a range of architects, designers and contractors.

The company’s target market includes residential and commercial builders. The team has taken great care in establishing relationships with design professionals who frequently specify MPG products on new construction projects. While these direct sales consistently make up a majority of the company’s sales, MPG also distributes through retailers such as Home Depot, Menard’s and Lowes.

A growing product line

With a large manufacturing and headquarters office located in Norfolk, Nebraska, MPG manufactures a strong product line that continues to grow year after year. The company’s QuietWalk product line is a laminate floor underlay that provides major benefits, especially for residents of multifamily buildings. QuietWalk has passed numerous sound tests and provides competitive performance as an underlayment material to protect floors and structures.

MP Global ProductsThe company’s LuxWalk line is an underlayment which has a polyethylene film that incorporates blended recycled polyester fiber, derived from soda bottles diverted from landfill with hot-melt adhesive. This product is popular as a contributor to LEED points. One of the first commercial applications for the LuxWalk line was at the Trump Towers in Miami, Florida.

“We just had some of our products installed at Washington State University’s football facility,” Boesch says. “The contractor utilized our Ultralayer beneath tile. We have some more of our products going into new construction. Right now there is one we are working on in Chicago which is a large multifamily project. We are providing QuietWalk for about 240 apartment units. Our product has been chosen for acoustic sound deadening between floors, as specified by the architect on the project.

The company recently introduced ZipUp, a ceiling product for acoustical tile. Boesch and his team are looking forward to getting into floor-to-ceiling mode with some of the newer products. The ZipUp line in particular is suitable for commercial projects. The crew is also manufacturing radiant heat products that are starting to gain some traction. The company’s Perfectly Warm Radiant Heat Underlayments are comprised of an electric mat. Boesch calls it one of simplest installations for radiant heat on the market. The easy installation of Perfectly Warm offers time and money saving benefits to contractors and their clientele. MPG continues to promote products directly to architects and designers in order to improve brand visibility.

Green for life

While sustainability has been a bit of a buzzword in recent years, MPG has been creating green products from the very beginning. “We established this co in 1997 on the intent to use recycled materials, so we have been green since Day One,” says Boesch. “We have not had to reinvent ourselves the way other businesses have. Sustainability is ingrained in our company culture.”

And MPG’s products speak for themselves. These high quality products perform as well, if not better than competing lines. These liners, underlayments and ceiling products have great R-value for insulation. On top of that, MPG diverts 760 tons of post-industrial, pre-consumer fibers from landfill every month. That adds up to 9,120 tons of recycled fiber annually. While that figure is already outstanding, the team continues to improve systems in order to manufacture and distribute more innovative building products every year.

“Right now we are working on some equipment to help provide us with more recycled raw materials,” says Boesch. “We traditionally purchase fibers for our recycled underlayment from the carpet and textile industry. We bring it in by the bundle and utilize it in our equipment. Now we are setting our facilities up to recycle post-consumer carpets so we can open up the fibers in-house to utilize in the manufacturing process. We will be purchasing material from regional carpet recycling facilities to do that.”

Making connections

In the coming years, the business is seeking to continue to expand its target audience. Boesch and his crew look forward to meeting with new design professionals to show them just what MPG products can do. Trade shows and conventions continue to provide a strong platform for the business’ marketing efforts. MPG attended the 2014 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo (Greenbuild) in New Orleans, which is one of Boesch’s favorite events. “What we like about Greenbuild is that it travels year after year. This is our sixth year and we have been to six different cities. Moving from place to place allows us to get exposure in new geographic regions and we like that we have access to a range of professionals in our industry.”

As time goes on, these connections are resulting in accelerated growth for the business. In the coming years, Boesch and the team are taking on new technology and innovations that will allow the company to provide products for new applications. The business will soon expand into tile and vinyl applications while simultaneously ramping up sustainability. With a solid product line and a knack for creativity, MP Global Products LLC has major growth potential in the green building market.
