Van Hoose Construction Co.

Setting the bar in geothermal building

Established in 1980, Van Hoose Construction Co. opened as a family-owned, full-service general contracting company in Oklahoma City. Five years later, Jeff Van Hoose joined the business. In 2007, Jeff became the sole owner of the company. The strength and success of the business today is built upon strong relationships established with its clients and subcontractors alike, innovations in geothermal construction, a strong portfolio and leadership.

A foundation built on relationships

“Creating a network of suppliers and subcontractors that our company as well as our clients can trust, has been the hallmark of the success and longevity of Van Hoose Construction,” says Van Hoose. The company uses a unique approach when hiring subcontractors and suppliers. 90 percent of Van Hoose Construction’s work is negotiated, therefore, Van Hoose has spent years locating and working with competitive subcontractors and suppliers with a significant emphasis on quality. “When we deal with quality subcontractors and suppliers, we don’t have to deal with the common issues in the plan and spec construction market.”

Van Hoose Construction Co.This negotiated design-build approach requires transparent accounting available for the client’s review. “Don’t underestimate the importance of good financial records on a project; it is a critical component in the owner-client relationship,” says Van Hoose. Van Hoose Construction uses A-Systems Jobview, a computer software program designed specifically for the construction industry.

By 2007, Jeff Van Hoose recognized the market value in geothermal heating and cooling systems. “The majority of our projects utilize geothermal,” says Van Hoose. He illustrates to his clients the long-term benefits of geothermal by showing them a financial summary which includes the payback period, tax credits, bonus depreciation, utility provider rebates and utility savings. The combination of geothermal benefits typically provide a payback period of less than one year. After 10 years, the owner has added millions of dollars to his bottom line.

Van Hoose Construction applies the geothermal approach to a variety of commercial projects. The company has a wide variety of commercial experience in building grocery stores, warehouses, distribution facilities, car dealerships, aviation construction, and over 10 million square feet of interior space.

“We are using cutting-edge technology which produces unparalleled energy efficiency. It’s important to me to give back to my industry by sharing my knowledge in this area,” says Van Hoose. The vast experience that he has garnered from his work in geothermal heating and cooling systems has given him the opportunity to share that knowledge by instructing a four-hour geothermal class which he teaches throughout the United States.

A strong portfolio

Van Hoose Construction has had the privilege of working with many national companies including: Sprint, AT&T, Cox Communications, Express Personnel, Hartford, Williams Sonoma, General Electric, Walgreen’s, and many others.

On a local level, Van Hoose Construction has recently completed a 130,000-square-foot project for Modular Services, which utilized geothermal heating and cooling. Another recent project, completed in 2013 is BancFirst, built in Edmond, Oklahoma. The 10,000-square-foot banking center won awards through the ABC because it utilized high efficiency foam insulation, low-e insulated glass, LED lighting and geothermal heating and cooling. Van Hoose Construction, in a joint venture, recently broke ground on a $31 million, six-story, corporate headquarters for Gulfport Energy. Van Hoose will focus on geothermal and all interior finishes.

Jeff has been recognized on several occasions by Butler Manufacturing as Builder of the Year; Million Dollar Builder; and High Performance Builder. In addition to running Van Hoose Construction, Van Hoose serves as the 2015/2016 chairman of the Advisory Council for Butler Manufacturing. Jeff serves on the Trinity Christian School Board, where he serves as the facilities director. He is also on the BancFirst Community Board in Edmond, Oklahoma.
