Canyon State Enterprises LLC

Roofing and stucco expertise in the Southwest

Canyon State Enterprises LLC has been providing quality roofing and stucco services to the state of Arizona for more than 10 years. Headquartered in Kingman, Arizona, Canyon State was founded in 2002 by Kevin Ott. Since the beginning, Canyon State has built a reputation as an honest, integrity-based company as a result of its outstanding work and customer satisfaction.

In November 2014 Canyon State was purchased by current owner Joe Juelfs. Beginning his professional career as a school teacher, Juelfs decided to take a risk and started his own painting company. “I decided that I didn’t want to live paycheck-to-paycheck so I took a chance and have been really fortunate,” says Juelfs. After painting houses for three years, Juelfs went into the residential general contracting industry, which eventually led to commercial work.

Commercial, industrial and residential

Canyon State specializes in all types of industrial and commercial roofing projects. From preventative care to new construction, Canyon State has the expertise to complete any job on time and on budget. On a regular basis the company employs 10 to 15 people full-time. “Depending on the season we could have up to 80 people working for us,” says Juelfs. “We mostly work with general contractors and we do a fair amount of maintenance for existing commercial buildings.”

In the commercial sector, Canyon State has recently completed projects for health care facilities such as an ALS hospital and residence center in Arizona. The company is also involved in the institutional industry providing maintenance and construction for schools throughout the state. “We also recently complete some roofing projects for Grand Canyon West, which is a tourist resort at the Grand Canyon.”

Customer service is a top priority for Canyon State. When working in the residential sector, the company often works with Angle Homes, a well-established general contractor in Arizona. “We’re big enough that we can accommodate the contractors that are building 200 homes a year,” says Juelfs. “We’re also efficient enough so that we don’t keep people waiting. We’re all about quality and efficiency.”

As a versatile, durable and affordable resource, stucco is one of the Southwest’s most popular building materials. Canyon State is a stucco contractor that has worked on thousands of projects over the years. “We’re one of the only commercial stucco contractors in the state of Arizona,” says Juelfs. “Our stucco experts undergo regular training to make sure that we stay up-to-date with the latest stucco technology.”

Canyon State self-performs the majority of the work on its projects. “We try not to sub out anything,” Juelfs explains. “We do run into situations where we’ll have to sub out some framing or HVAC services.” Over the years, Canyon State has maintained a network of suppliers and subcontractors that the company partners with on a regular basis. Juelfs says that managing the relationships with strategic partners is crucial to providing the best customer service possible. “The service that you receive from a supplier or subcontractor directly affects the service you provide to the client,” Juelfs details. If a supplier isn’t on time with a product, then you have to scramble to get the job done in time. That’s why we work with suppliers and subs we know we can trust.”

Measuring progress

Other than the bottom line, Juelfs measures success by the quality relationships that Canyon State has built with its clients and strategic partners. “This is a very word-of-mouth business so when I hear good things about us I feel like we must be doing something right,” says Juelfs. “It’s also great to get repeat business because we know that people trust us.”

Although the economy is beginning to recover from the recession, many aspects of numerous industries still struggle to remain afloat. The fact that Canyon State is experiencing growth as a company creates a sense of pride for Juelfs. “It means a lot to me to see everybody come to work every day and know that we’re helping them and their families survive,” Juelfs explains. “Knowing that we have work lined up and are able to keep everybody busy is important as well.”

Looking ahead

Juelfs is constantly looking to expand and build on unique ideas. “I look forward to going to work every day and trying new things,” says Juelfs. “That’s what motivates me every day. I’ll see a piece of property and it might be a rundown piece of junk but I see the potential of what I could make of it.”

Juelfs has high hopes for the future of Canyon State. With locations in Kingman and Bullhead City, Canyon State will soon be launching another division in Phoenix. “After Phoenix, my plan is to then launch another division in Yuma,” says Juelfs. “I’d also like to eventually look into government contracting and be working on military bases.”

When Juelfs isn’t running the day-to-day operations at Canyon State, he is busy coaching youth sports. “I coach varsity football, middle school basketball and anything else I can find the time for,” says Juelfs. “I also enjoy visiting my family’s ranch in Nebraska to go hunting every year.”

As Juelfs leads the company into the future, Canyon State Enterprises LLC will continue to provide quality workmanship in the roofing and stucco industries
