For nearly a decade Platinum Construction Inc. (Platinum) has been working with California’s finest prime contractors, delivering outstanding metal-stud framing, drywall, lath, plaster, acoustical plaster, EIFS systems and fireproofing. Based in Anaheim, Calif., Platinum displays high-quality craftsmanship, communication, value engineering and project delivery.

“I’ve been in the industry for 27 years and founded Platinum in 2005,” says Darrin Streilein, president of Platinum. “We offer a range of services, including metal stud framing, drywall, lath, plaster, acoustical plaster and EIFS systems for new construction and modernization of commercial properties.”

According to Streilein, the company delivers a great deal of work with municipal public works, as well as schools, colleges and universities. “We are also focused on the private market, retail, hospitality, tenant improvements, low income housing, etc.” he reveals.

Platinum serves the expanse of California, from San Diego to Mendocino County and everything in between. “We’re a union subcontractor, which means we can employ a quality workforce, anywhere from 40 to 250 workers depending on the size and scope of the project,” notes Streilein.

Eyes on UCLA

Even through the recession, Streilein says Platinum’s workforce has been on the high end as the company completes many sizable projects from medical buildings, middle schools, science centers to dormitories. “We’re currently working on a major LEED-Gold tenant improvement portion of the new $115.6 million Edie and Lew Wasserman Building on the UCLA campus,” he details.

Designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects, the new building will unite and expand the campus’ existing surgical facilities and allow for the growth of research and programs aimed at restoring and preserving eyesight. According to UCLA, the 100,000-square-foot, six-story research center is the third building of the school’s Stein Eye Institute.

“LEED-Gold is the third architectural award the building has received,” UCLA cites. “A Community Impact Award was awarded in 2011 at the Los Angeles Business Council’s Los Angeles Architectural Awards. The building was also named Best Medical Project by the Los Angeles Business Journal’s 2013 Commercial Real Estate Awards.”

Exterior application excellence

From higher education to the Helen Stacey Middle School in Huntington Beach, Calif., Platinum is the gold standard for a range of exterior application excellence. The Project Owner wanted an attractive weather resistant wall finish that fell within the tight district budget.

As the applicator on the project, Platinum worked with Great Western Building Materials, general contractor Summit DCK and engineering company Technical Consultants (ETC). A brand new finish from Sto Corp., Sto Milano was selected as the right application for the job.

“The owner wanted an ultra-smooth exterior stucco finish,” Streilein explains. “Not only does Stolit Milano provide the look they want, but it’s also low maintenance, because of its moisture resistance and vapor permeability.”

Streilein is proud to note that Sto Corp. was so pleased with the application of the Sto Milano, the company decided to feature the building in its manufacture brochure for the new product.

“Platinum is always looking for versatile, innovative products,” Streilein continues. “It’s a tough, very competitive market out there. We’re always looking for something that sets us apart from other subcontractors.”

The downturn in the economy over the past several years has had a great impact on the market. According to Streilein, the lack of work volume has caused companies to decrease the company’s profit margins. “It seems as though this trend has become the Status Quo and is taking a long time to rebound and return to its previous state,” he continues. “We will continue to work on diversifying into the private sector and are looking forward to the future and upcoming opportunities.” Nonetheless, no matter the project, Platinum Construction Inc. delivers premium subcontracting bound by experience and craftsmanship.
