Perimeter Security Group

Family-owned security contractor is an example of integrity and innovation in the Midwest

For nearly 20 years, Perimeter Security Group (PSG) has been a Women-Owned Small Business that has become one of the leading providers of perimeter security systems in the country. Located in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, PSG provides turnkey installations for custom iron fabrication, security fencing, perimeter protection devices, access controls, video surveillance and automated entry systems for projects ranging from private residences to the most secure military facilities and correctional institutions in the world.

Thinking outside of the box

In an industry that is constantly evolving, there is no typical day-to-day operation.  “Our team of employees is what really keeps us at the top of the industry,” says Brenda Blood, president and co-owner of PSG. “Our crews spend many years training. They have to remain open-minded because every day is a new learning experience. I tend to look to hire people who like to live ‘outside the lines,’ because that’s what we do.”

Although Blood and her husband Troy may not have realized it at the time, the couple was looking for something outside of the lines when they took over her father’s automation business, which would ultimately become PSG. “I worked for my father’s company and planned on continuing it when we took it over,” recalls Blood. “We didn’t find it that exciting when we eventually bought the business, so we geared ourselves toward something different.”

While headquartered in Idaho, PSG has completed work throughout the Western United States as well as internationally. “We’re doing a project right now in Haiti at the Unites States Embassy,” says Blood. “What’s nice about our work is that we’re usually not on a jobsite any longer than one month. That lends itself to obtaining really good crews that want to work for you.”

The work that PSG completes extends beyond intercoms and security cameras. Included in the company’s services is the installation of intricate security systems with intrusion detection in fence lines of maximum-security prisons. “We’ll also do all of the steel in the fence line and gate operation entries,” Blood explains. “We’ll work on anything that leads up to the entrance of the facility.”

Accepting a challenge

One of PSG’s first large-scale jobs took place with the Port of Seattle Consolidated Rental Car Facility, which consisted of five floors totaling 2.1 million square feet. The facility processes approximately 12,000 to 14,000 rental cars on a peak day. PSG installed high-security iron slide gates that were automated with hydraulic gate operators, parking control barrier arms and crash-related vehicle control barriers spreading out across the 23-acre site. Through fiber optics and converters, PSG integrated all control points into one access control system platform, which allowed for monitoring and manageability to be controlled from a central location at the facility.

“It was a really fun project because we wired the entire facility and installed crash barriers,” says Blood. “It was a three-year project and was very rewarding when it was finished.”

PSG is currently working on a project with Portland Air National Guard Base at Portland International Airport. The work involved in this project is similar to the Consolidated Rental Car Facility in that PSG is installing fencing and crash barriers. “This one has been a bit more intense because it is about the same size job of the rental car facility, but yet the time frame for the project is 2½ months,” says Blood. “We’re doing some of the wiring on this job but not all of it because we didn’t bid on that portion like we did with the rental car facility.”

Blood is proud of the fact that she is somewhat of an anomaly as a woman who owns a business in the construction industry. While this presents numerous challenges in her work, Blood finds that there are advantages as well. “In regards to sales, it has been a good thing because I can go out and meet people and I have found that they will actually pay attention and be focused on what I am saying,” Blood explains. “At the same time, I constantly have to prove myself with knowledge and experience. In order to earn respect as a boss for many of our employees, it’s important for me to know the ins and outs of our entire operation as well as the industry.”
