MTech Mechanical Technologies Group Inc.

A Decade of Industry Excellence

Despite facing an economic environment that brought various challenges to the construction industry over the past decade, Colorado-based MTech Mechanical Technologies Group Inc. (MTech) utilized a client-focused approach and a superior service strategy to become Colorado’s leader in providing mechanical systems for the commercial and industrial industries.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012, MTech offers a complete lineup of mechanical engineering design, build, and maintenance solutions designed to create smarter environments for the commercial and industrial markets. The company combines traditional experience with the newest technologies to meet the ever-changing needs of its clients. Most importantly, however, the company’s success can be attributed to a shared vision established by MTech’s owners when the company was founded. Marco Capitelli, Thomas E. Dean and Steven Kugler founded MTech knowing that their reputation would hinge on client relationships and satisfaction. It is a philosophy that still resonates 10 years later. Building client satisfaction through the development of trustworthy client relationships is a core MTech value.

Capitelli, Dean and Kugler have nearly 100 years of combined industry experience collaborating to create, implement and design the industry’s latest mechanical systems technologies. MTech provides comprehensive design, build and maintenance services for the commercial and industrial markets.

“We are very excited and honored to celebrate MTech’s 10th anniversary this year and we couldn’t be happier with the progress we’ve made and the industry support we’ve received,” says Dean, MTech’s president. “The three of us recognize that developing deep relationships with extremely loyal clients has provided great opportunities for the organization.”

MTech continues to earn opportunities and grow its portfolio in the private and public markets. It appears the more technically or operationally challenging the project, the better. The company’s team of mechanical engineers, fabrication specialists and certified installers take pride in delivering projects with an integrated and proactive approach toward mechanical, high-purity process piping, repair and preventive maintenance services.

Integrated Process

MTech’s preconstruction personnel are some of the most experienced mechanical engineers in the region. As a result, the company uses an integrated approach to design and construct projects providing clients with consistently accurate and trustworthy scopes and budgets.

“As a very results-oriented company, MTech reinforces its integrated process by bringing a heavy emphasis on preconstruction services to assure a proactive, positive impact on a project,” says Capitelli, MTech’s executive vice president. “We understand mechanical systems and collaborate with engineers to ensure their designs come to life as they intended.”

MTech streamlines major projects by providing in-house engineering, detailing and fabrication capabilities, including 3-D computer-aided design. Consulting engineers find teaming with MTech’s engineering staff on design-assist and design-build projects a user-friendly experience.

MTech is a member of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), as well as the Colorado chapter of the Association of General Contractors (AGC), ensuring the company is always up to date on the industry’s latest developments and safety regulations.

MTech can also provide services after construction, including maintenance of mechanical systems, energy auditing and recommissioning of systems. The service division’s team of more than 30 professionals, combined with of MTech’s LEED Accredited Professionals, can help clients identify areas of improvement to save money on energy costs or prolong the life cycle of major mechanical or critical systems.

In addition to its Denver headquarters, the company also operates a mountain division based in Avon, Colo. MTech has expertise specializing in projects unique to the state’s mountain region. This division sources the best available talent from the local workforce, bringing the horsepower and technical expertise of the MTech family to major resort projects in the local mountain community.

Strong Operations

MTech’s experience has allowed the company to be a preferred strategic partner for projects in various sectors including pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotech laboratory, cleanrooms, data center, educational, institutional, energy, office complex, multiunit residential and hospitality.

Kugler, MTech’s executive vice president, speaks more in depth about MTech’s driving forces. “Integrity and performance are key values that have guided us through the years,” he explains. “We honor our commitments and have a passion to create success for our clients. From conceptual estimates to project closeout, we strive to deliver on our promise. MTech will never turn its back on a client issue, even if the project is out of warranty. If the MTech name is on it, the client can expect a lifetime commitment of service.”

The performance of the company is more than the sum of each part. MTech prides itself on hiring, training and retaining quality office and mechanical trade personnel. MTech’s people are inspired by excellence and embrace pride in a job well done.

MTech has engaged in some of the region’s most progressive and ambitious construction projects. MTech was selected as the mechanical contractor for the construction of the Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building at the University of Colorado Boulder’s East Campus.

The $160 million project is being hailed as a major game-changer for biotechnology in Colorado, as the building has been designed to foster interdepartmental collaborative research that will have a great impact on human lives. The building itself was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification with 336,800-square feet of space to house more than 600 faculty, staff and students across nine departments. The team fully expects to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

To facilitate life-changing biotechnology breakthroughs, the building houses next-generation resources, including DNA sequencing and bioinformatics, a vivarium, electrical shop, a chemical and biological engineering machine room, nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray crystallography, as well as electron paramagnetic resonance. The vast selection of resources is also being made open to the industry for use at competitive rates, which the university believes will help drive innovation with impact far beyond the state.

“JE Dunn construction [the general contractor for the Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotech building] deserves much credit for the success of the overall project,” says Dean. “The approach they take fostered a working culture that kept everyone working together and progressing smoothly.”

MTech provided a complete suite of mechanical services on the project, doing work totaling over $32 million. The team completed construction on schedule and on budget earlier this year. MTech previously completed work on the University’s Visual Arts Center for Mortenson, which opened in January 2010.

Facilities for Tomorrow

Just as the CU biotechnology project was completing, MTech began work on the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

According to Dean, it will be one of the only megawatt-scale test facilities in the country that integrates electrical, thermal and fuel systems with high-performance modeling and simulation capabilities. The 182,500-square foot center will become a place for 200 scientists and engineers to research and test technologies and devices that will become economical, viable and renewable sources of electricity that are also compatible with the country’s existing electrical distribution infrastructure.

The $135 million complex was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification and is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification. MTech provided design/assist services for the building’s mechanical systems, which were prohibited from using refrigerant/vapor compression cooling systems for the data center.

Investing in the Community

The company’s recent portfolio of projects is a testament to its passionate team of professionals and commitment to excellence. Not only does the company give its best to every client, but it also finds time to give back to the community. Employees donate time and funds to support local nonprofits like the Girls and Boys Clubs of America, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts of America and the United Way, among many others.

While the company celebrates the growth and impact they have experienced within the Rocky Mountain region over the past 10 years, MTech Mechanical Technologies Group Inc.’s focus is on the next decade and the continued pursuit to innovate and transform the design build/design assist mechanical industry.
