For nearly 20 years Max Alley Construction LLC has been a leading premier general contractor serving central Texas and the southern United States. Headquartered in Texarkana, Texas, with offices in Houston and Austin, Max Alley specializes in real estate development and design-build projects. “We’re a contracting firm that does a lot of negotiated work,” says James Herrington, managing member and co-founder of Max Alley. “A fair amount of our business is made up of design-build projects that are generated from referrals.”
Max Alley was founded in 1997 by Herrington and Kurt Green, who have worked together as brokers in the construction and real estate development industry for more than 35 years. Through their experience working together, Herrington and Green have found that their attention to detail and ability to follow-up with clients has been a major factor in their success. “We recently did some warranty repair work for a client that we worked with nine years ago,” says Herrington. “Not many people will go back and do work for a warranty nine years later.”
The people that make up the staff of Max Alley have also been crucial in the company’s lifespan. With a long-serving staff, many of the employees of Max Alley have been with the company since its inception. “They are all experts at what they do,” says Herrington. “Everybody here is like family and we all take pride in providing our customers with the best quality product.” With office staff and superintendents working in the field, Max Alley employs approximately 25 people.
A diversified portfolio
Max Alley works with an array of clients in the commercial and health care sectors. Working with national and regional retailers and restaurants, the company has built units for Raising Cane’s, Advance Auto Parts and Christian Brothers Automotive. “We have developed a lot of strip malls that we own and then lease back to clients,” says Herrington. “We find and purchase the property, handle the plans, permitting and predevelopment work for the client before we build it.” Max Alley has also developed numerous doctors’ offices and financial institutions throughout the state of Texas.
Through its work with Family Dollar, a Fortune 500 company, Max Alley was recognized by the retailer in 2015 and awarded Developer of the Year, as well as Contractor of the Year. Max Alley bested nearly 100 construction and investment groups for the two awards, which were given in recognition of quality workmanship, on-time delivery and competitive pricing. “It was a great honor for us to receive these awards,” says Herrington. “It was for our work with Family Dollar all over the United States.”
Another notable project that Max Alley was recognized for was a store it built for Crocker’s Jewelers in Texarkana. The store was awarded second place in the Big Cool division by instoremag. com. The design of the retail location stands out in the neighborhood, due to its dramatic yet inviting façade. The entryway to the building is accented with two three-foot-tall gas lanterns scaling the sides of large custom-built wrought-iron doors, which feature the Crocker’s logo in the center, making it stand out to passersby. “This store is one that we are very proud of,” says Herrington. “Both the interior and exterior are just so unique and beautiful.”
In the health care sector, Max Alley is currently working with DaVita, which is one of the largest kidney care companies in the United States. The project that Max Alley is managing involves the construction of a 16,000-square-foot build-to-suit dialysis clinic in Texarkana. “We’re also building a new facility for Texana Bank,” Herrington explains. “This will be the second facility we’ve built for them.”
A reason for success
Through its existence, Max Alley has made a conscious effort to ensure complete customer satisfaction. This philosophy has established a strong reputation for company in the central Texas construction industry as a firm that honors its word and stands behind its work. “What makes me very proud of this company is the fact that I don’t think you could anybody that would have anything bad to say about us,” says Herrington. “We don’t burn bridges and we don’t shift our responsibilities. We follow up with every customer and do what we say we’re going to do.”
Moving forward, Max Alley will remain a leader in its current market while working to diversify its client base. The company is currently negotiating with numerous convenience store chains to become their exclusive contractor. “We have deals out in front of them and actually have one deal going with one company,” notes Herrington.
As Max Alley diversifies, the company’s philosophy on accountability, coupled with its dedication to customer satisfaction, will position Max Alley Construction LLC to become a household name in any market throughout the country.
