Lone Star State Construction
Family-owned and -operated Lone Star State Construction has been serving clients throughout the American West for the last 16 years. Based in San Antonio, the experienced construction firm has been operating exclusively in Texas since 2005, after its leadership team migrated from Colorado. With expertise in residential and commercial construction, Lone Star has delivered a diverse portfolio of both new construction and remodeling work.
Dave Peters established the business alongside his brothers, Don and Daren, and his nephew, Jason. The Peters brothers grew up in the industry and launched their first enterprise when Dave was only 15 years old. Dave also founded D. Michael Designs to fill the architecture and design void in the San Antonio market and to support Lone Star State Construction.
The company has built a strong reputation in the Texas construction market. The team excels at building partnerships that allow Lone Star State Construction to provide turnkey solutions to its clients. While the business has been known for exceeding expectations in the residential market for many years, a growing claim on the commercial sector spells out significant growth potential for this Texas-based builder, specifically in church remodeling.
Building a reputation
With a team of 16 people and an average of 50 ongoing projects on any given day, communication, quality and experience differentiate Lone Star State Construction from its competitors. These core values are part and parcel of every task, policy and decision made in the business. Dave doesn’t like to micromanage, but communication with his team is critical to the success of the company. “Each morning we have a roundtable meeting where we discuss the details of each project and then regroup in the afternoon to debrief,” he explains. “I have an open-door policy and welcome discussion about employee entrepreneurial ideas or procedural concerns.”
The team on each project — including both in-house expertise and subcontractors, is the company’s greatest asset. “As a general contractor, the project managers I hire and train can estimate the project without bringing a gaggle of contractors over to the home,” says Dave. “Our project managers create the estimate and select the appropriate subcontractors for each project. They then provide each subcontractor with their scope of work and pricing, meeting their needs and our profit requirements.”
In most instances, Lone Star State Construction is able to maintain the value that independent contractors often bring to the table. “Say a big paint job comes up; the strength of our strategy and structure enables us to offer prices that compete with the independent ‘paint-only’ contractor,” Dave explains. With one company managing the project, delays and finger-pointing between contractors can be avoided.
The company’s firm hold on value in the market means continued success. Dave and his colleagues take great pride in hearing positive things about Lone Star State Construction’s performance through social media. Customer satisfaction is its own reward. “I’m passionate about what I do, I have high standards and I am an entrepreneur,” Dave explains. “We take care of your project from conception to actual drawings, on through to completion.”
A substantial portfolio
While residential work has long been the primary focus of Lone Star State Construction, Dave and his team are breaking into the commercial market with a strong reputation and an important new partnership. “We’re in the process of completing a $3 million church remodel we procured last year,” he says. “We partnered with Church Interiors, who have completed over 10,000 church remodels in the last 33 years. We are doing build-outs and remodels and will create some new churches very soon.”
Through the company’s growing relationship with Church Interiors, the business has a growing backlog of religious facility projects in southern Texas. While Lone Star State Construction’s portfolio includes a slew of impressive residential-sector work, such as: serving as project manager for Kelsey Grammer’s Beaver Creek, Colorado, home and a number of high-end home finishes, a $630,000 retirement duplex and more, commercial work is a growing sector and Dave is looking forward to new challenges and opportunities.
As the team emerges in this new market, Lone Star State Construction easily stands on its own. The business has been recognized three years in a row on the Inc. 5000 fastest growing companies list, has been named a Remodeling Big 50 Company and has been No. 1 on Angie’s List locally garnering 105 Super Service Awards since the company was first listed in 2008. The team has also amassed 16 Contractor of the Year awards from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).
A reputation for quality and a dedication to efficiency and customer satisfaction continue to set Lone Star State Construction apart from other contractors serving Texas.
