GSM Roofing

A Family of Comprehensive Roofing Solutions

GSM Roofing (GSM), A Gooding Company, has been active in the roofing industry in the Mid-Atlantic for over 65 years. Since its beginnings as Gooding, Simpson & Mackes – a three-man roofing company – the family-owned and -operated firm has grown to become one of the most respected roofing contractors, with an award-winning safety record and 57 employees showcased on the wall who have been at the company for more than 25 years (with two people in an unofficial 50-year club). The firm’s longevity is based in a simple philosophy: to give the client a long-lasting roofing solution at any price point. “We strive to do the right thing and we don’t walk away from problems,” explains Reed Gooding, a third generation of the Gooding family firmly planted in the business as the current president of GSM.

GSM’s 125 employees offer both commercial and specialty roofing solutions, augmented by a complementary sheet metal division, GSM Industrial, that handles non-roofing metal fabrication projects. The firm has two locations, with a headquarters in Ephrata, Pa., and a branch in Elkton, Md. From these locations GSM’s highly-skilled craftsmen can be called upon for new construction, retrofit and service work, operating throughout south central and southeastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware.

The firm’s in-house capabilities are reinforced through a long history partnering with a dozen of the largest roofing system manufacturers, specifically exhibited through the company’s being awarded Elite Status by Sika Sarnafil Inc., being named a Firestone 2011 Master Contractor, and being designated a Carlisle SynTec Hall of Fame member with over 1,000 projects correctly installed.

GSM draws from the networking opportunities and industry knowledge of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) – Keystone Chapter, the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), the National Slate Association (NSA) and the Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress, among others. Additionally, GSM is a member of RoofConnect, the largest national commercial roofing services provider network. Between GSM’s relationships with a wide variety of roofing system providers, industry associations and the in-house sheet metal workshop, GSM is capable of providing the most advanced, long-lasting, customized roofing solutions to clients in multiple sectors at any price point. These options include built-up roofs (traditional and modified bitumen), custom metal roofs (copper, zinc and stainless steel), pre-engineered metal (standing seam and structural), single-ply roofs (EPDM, PVC and TPO), cedar shake roofs, shingle roofs, slate roofs, tile roofs and green-roofing solutions.

Any Roof Under the Sun

Recently, GSM was awarded the Gold Circle Award from the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) for a project it recently completed. “We were contracted to install a very sophisticated roofing system to a newly constructed private residence known as the D Gallery in Gladwyne, Pa.,” says Gooding.

The project’s construction management was overseen by W.S. Cumby and designed by Point B Design as a metal, glass and concrete structure, to function as a private art gallery for the residents. The building’s design focuses on facilitating the installation of art exhibits and capitalizes on the shifting natural sunlight throughout the year through advanced automation technology. Though the design of the roof changed over the course of construction, eventually GSM recommended the use of a standing seam lead-coated copper roof, a roofing solution that can last up to 100 years. Because of the angular design of the roof, it was installed as individual sheets over 3,500 square feet to allow for the customized spacing of the seams. The design and installation was so staggering that the firm won the prestigious award within the Innovation in New Construction category.

GSM is able to deliver such lauded projects because of a concentration on superior craftsmanship and attention-to-detail that is overseen and managed rigorously by a Registered Roof Observer, aided by a full-time and credentialed Safety Director to assure productivity without consequence.

More Green, for Less

Over the years, GSM has expanded its green roofing solutions to include coatings, cool roofs, daylighting, photovoltaic and vegetative roofs, and even offers LEED certification consultation. The service was created to advise clients on the best solutions to gain lower maintenance and energy bills, but also to inform a client about which roofing systems will provide the requisite number of points for LEED certification and result in increased tax incentives. In addition, the company also offers energy-efficient roof coating services, vegetative roofing, photovoltaic solutions, storm water management, skylight and suntube installation, and roofing system recycling to reduce landfill.

A few years ago GSM was recognized for its efforts in promoting energy-efficient roof coating systems on a project it had for Susquehanna Bancshares Inc. at its corporate headquarters in Lititz, Pa. The structure dates back to 1935 and had at one point been an operating mill. Eventually, the building began experiencing roof leaks along the seams of the roofing system that seeped into the insulation. Though many firms would have recommended re-roofing, GSM instead recommended replacing the affected insulation and applying a highly reflective urethane coating, called Geogard, to the existing roof, saving the company thousands of dollars and preventing an entire roof’s worth of rubber from being throw away.

The end result not only saved the company from re-roofing, but also reduces the company’s energy consumption. Though the coating used has been around since the 1980s, coatings have only recently become increasingly popular among clients looking for more sustainable roofing options. In the case of Susquehanna Bancshares, the coating reduced the amount of heat being absorbed into the building, allowing the air conditioning systems to work less to cool the building. The coating also reflects natural sunlight back into the saw tooth roof’s clerestory and has greatly reduced the need for artificial lighting.

Even with its abilities to provide any manner of roof, both showpiece and highly environmentally minded, as well as wall panel and waterproofing services, GSM still has its concerns during the recent unstable economic climate. But the Gooding family understands what it takes to weather a storm, both physically and philosophically.

“We don’t know what’s around the corner in this economy, but for now we’ll be focusing on doing what we do best and continue identifying the areas we can improve,” says Gooding. “Moving forward, we’re hoping to further develop our green technologies as well as build on our successes from the first 65 years.”

As they say, “All roofs are not created equal; neither are roofing contractors.” GSM Roofing has been proving why it stands out for over six decades, and it continues to by assuring that quality is built into every job it undertakes.
