Gorick Construction Co. Inc.

Family business remains agile in fluctuating industry

Specializing in heavy highway construction, earth moving and demolition, New York-based Gorick Construction Co. Inc. has built a diverse portfolio of projects and clients for more than 70 years. Located in Binghamton, New York, Gorick Construction maintains a team of experts that offer a vast array of services that include demolition, landfill and environmental construction, crushing and material recycling, mass excavation, heavy highway construction and site development to name a few.

Gorick Construction works within a 120-mile radius of its headquarters but will travel as necessary for certain clients and projects. In addition to providing value engineering alternatives on each project, the company provides clients with complete and accurate estimates using computerized take off and 3-D modeling.

Gorick Construction Co. Inc.

Founded by Alfred and Stephanie Gorick in 1945, Gorick Construction has remained a family business. Today, the couple’s son, Al Gorick, is president of the company. Joining Gorick Construction full time in 1986, Gorick has been involved with the company his entire life and received a bachelor’s degree in civil environmental engineering from Clarkson University. Al’s sister Sally Shirk is the corporate secretary and Trevor Moyer serves as the company’s vice president of operations.

The team’s extensive expertise doesn’t stop there. Gorick Construction boasts 45 highly trained employees and maintains a fleet of more than 60 pieces of late-model heavy construction equipment, including the company’s two  ultra-high-reach demolition excavators and Trimble GPS machine-controlled equipment. These pieces of machinery ensure that Gorick Construction is able to fulfill its motto – “Whatever it takes.”

A dedication to excellence and forward thinking has enabled Gorick Construction to remain a leader in the industry. Through various organizations, the company has received recognition for numerous projects. One form of recognition came in the form of the Gold Safety Award from the New York State Chapter of the General Contractors of America. The company has also received numerous Gold Safety Awards through its association with the Northeastern Subcontractors Association, which represents more than 500 eastern New York subcontractors, specialty contractors and material suppliers.

Specialized demolition

In recent years, Gorick Construction has increased its market share in specialized demolition. The company applied its expertise to the demolition of a building for bio-pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers. Working as a subcontractor for Lendlease, Gorick Construction used high-precision tactics to take down a four-story, reinforced concrete structure that was attached to a cancer research facility that remained in operation.

“Due to the product testing that was happening in the remaining facility, vibration monitoring was very important.” says Gorick. “It was also important that we maintained the separation bay from the existing building so they could install a walkway after the demolition.”

Another notable project that Gorick Construction was recently involved in was the West Stands demolition of Schoellkopf Field at Cornell University. This job also included the ability to work within and around a facility that remained in operation as the stadium continued to be utilized by the Cornell lacrosse team throughout construction. “The stands were actually connected to a parking garage that remained in operation as well,” recalls Gorick. “A lot of the work we do is involved with organizations expanding their facilities, which is a good sign for the industry and economy.”

Whatever it takes

In an industry as competitive as construction, many companies are able to create and uphold a definition of success that remains unique. Increasing the bottom line, substantial annual growth and maintaining a strong backlog of work are among a few aspects that organizations utilize as a tool for measuring progress and job satisfaction. At Gorick Construction, the company pulse is gauged not only by revenue but also by the opportunities for success the company provides for its clients. “When we provide a client with a project that is within their budget, maximizes their dollar value and is a quality product, it’s a winning formula for all parties involved,” says Gorick. “It’s all about performing above and beyond the owner and client’s expectations.”

“When we provide a client with a project that is within their budget, maximizes their dollar value and is a quality product, it’s a winning formula for all parties involved,” says Gorick.

With a transition taking place in the construction industry as baby boomers prepare for retirement and millennials entering the market, companies are being presented with the challenge of implementing new ideas and technology application, while transferring wisdom from experienced workers to the new generation. Gorick Construction has been fortunate in this area by way of hiring younger folks who are receptive to the values and work ethic of the seasoned employees of Gorick Construction.

“They have adapted the work ethic and methods while also bringing with them some technological aspects that we are able to benefit from,” Gorick explains. “You need to have both of those qualities in this industry so it is working out very well for us.”

By diversifying and taking on new and different projects, Gorick Construction Co. Inc. is able to remain competitive through tough economic times and the increase of stiff competition.
