After years of working in construction, Doug Gunther and his wife Ami decided to start their own company. With his experience in the industry and Ami’s background in finance, the couple ventured out on their own and founded G2 Construction in 2005. Located in Kennewick, Washington, G2 Construction has developed into a leading general contracting firm working in the commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors.
Getting started
Growing up in the construction business, Doug began operating a backhoe at a young age. While digging septic systems with his father and grandfather, he developed a passion for the industry and decided to make it a career. After working in Arizona, Doug and Ami met and eventually moved to Washington where Doug began working for a local contractor as a commercial superintendent. “We came to the conclusion that we were capable of doing general contracting work for ourselves,” says Ami. “So that’s what we did and G2 Construction was formed.”
Working out of their home, the first job that Ami and Doug completed was for a local community college that Doug had competed work for in his previous position. Within a year G2 Construction had moved out of Ami and Doug’s home and into a commercial space in downtown Kennewick. In July 2013, G2 Construction built its own corporate headquarters. The 8,000-square-foot office building includes an MR24 Roof and SunLite Strips. The construction project also includes two additional office suites occupied by tenants.
The design of the G2 Corporate headquarters incorporates the Butler Widespan Structural System, which is a framing system that allows maximum use of interior space. The design of the building is the result of a partnership formed in 2011 between G2 Construction and Butler Manufacturing, a building-solutions company that provides the design, manufacture and marketing of metal building systems for commercial construction.
As the exclusive authorized Butler builder of the Northwest, G2 Construction has utilized Butler systems for numerous clients in commercial, industrial and agricultural industries. The use of the system generates flexibility in design as well as cost-effective engineering, reduced construction schedules and the most extensive warranty in the industry.
A multipurpose company
Although G2 Construction is a general contracting firm, the company has recently been offering its framing services on a subcontracting basis. “That’s been going very well,” says Ami. “We’re doing frame work for a 60,000-square-foot retirement and assisted-living facility which obviously involves a lot of framing.” G2 Construction is also working with the same general contractor to complete framing of an Alzheimer’s facility.
G2 Construction recently completed a dentist office in Kennewick called Dentistry for Kids. The 10,000-square-foot facility includes 2,300 square feet of tenant space, as well as a basement, crawl space and slab-on-grade portions to accommodate multiple dental equipment needs. “It’s a really cool building with a lot of neat finishes,” says Ami. “The architectural features are interesting as it has a structured insulated panel system the roof a ‘wave’ look to coincide with its ‘little surfers’ theme.” The building also includes multicolored glass, bamboo trims, tiki huts, a fish tank and a complete acoustical ceiling designed to resemble a cloud.
Working in both the private and public sectors, G2 Construction often completes projects for municipalities. The company recently completed a renovation job for the Benton County Courthouse. This job involves a complete HVAC and interior upgrade throughout the facility as well as a three-story exterior renovation to the façade of the building.
“It’s a historical 1920s building and we’re doing some pretty interesting stuff the outside as well as the inside,” Ami explains. “It can be challenging when you get into the public work with all the logistics and paper work but we’ve been doing it for so long now that we have it down to a science and it’s become second nature to us.”
A bright future
In a constantly evolving industry, Ami enjoys the new challenges presented to her and her company every day. While performing private and public work in commercial and industrial sectors, the opportunity to learn about different industries presents itself with every job. “I love the ever-changing environment,” says Ami. “It’s always exciting to be going after that next job. We do everything from hair salons to assisted-living centers and every business that we work for has something different and unique to it that we get to learn about.”
As G2 Construction progresses into the future, the company is looking to continue to grow and increase its revenue. “Last year was our best year since we’ve been in business,” says Ami. “We’re expecting to blow that out of the water this year.” While G2 Construction to increase its portfolio, the company will continue to establish new relationships with clients and strategic partners.
