Learning to navigate the repair process

The company has experienced double-digit growth since partners Mark Watson and Joe LeVecchi founded the business in early 2007. “We started the business in 2007 and opened for business by 2008,” recounts Watson, founder and co-owner of Exterior Medics. “Joe and I had worked together at two different companies — the first one being a national organization that specialized in insurance rehabs and the restoration process; the second company was more of a local, family-owned roofer.”

Both Watson and LeVecchi learned a great deal about the industry with their first hands-on construction roles. “We learned how to do everything, from negotiating claims to project management once a claim was approved and how the different trades come together,” says Watson.

Understanding the insurance claims process and how to best advocate for homeowners gave the partners a solid foundation from which to build their own business. “The second company we worked for gave us a smaller view,” explains Watson. “We had to justify where every dollar was spent and it made it so we were highly accountable for each and every project. It was about doing it the right way with a high ethical standard.”

With a solid experience base and many close contacts and strong relationships, Watson and LeVecchi set out to start Exterior Medics and continue to do business the right way. “There were no hard feelings at our past employers, we just wanted to build our own business and set a standard of excellence,” says Watson.

The entrepreneurs have merged the best of the best in exterior projects: façade remodeling, design, repairs, roofing, siding, gutters, masonry, chimneys, doors and windows — the complete exterior. Exterior Medics currently has a staff of 29, including 10 in-house craftsmen and trade professionals.

Above and beyond industry standards

“Today, it’s not really hard to meet code; it’s really the bare minimum,” says Watson. “We’re not trying to achieve the bare minimum. We’re so confident in the fact that the work we do is quality work that we provide a 100 percent, non-prorated lifetime workmanship warrantee on any full installation we do. This is something we do that’s very different; the industry average is about 10 years.”

Not only does Exterior Medics offer quality and protection in its workmanship, the company also offers free estimates and professional in-home consultation. “This is where our name of our company comes in,” explains Watson. “When Joe and I started, we envisioned a company that would help educate customers, giving them the options that are out there as a doctor would with his patient — hence the name, Exterior Medics.”

Watson says Exterior Medics is different in terms of this approach. “We ask a lot of questions,” he says. “This is something we feel the industry was lacking: a company that delivered a more tailored solution by truly listening.”

Partnering with GAF, a premier roofing shingles and materials manufacturer, Exterior Medics is a master roofer, delivering roofing installation, repair and inspection of asphalt shingle, cedar shake, synthetic slate, genuine slate, flat and metal roofs. “We’re one of the top 2 percent roofers in the U.S.,” says Watson. “We’re one of the few companies that have been awarded prestigious GAF Master Elite Roofing Contractor status. We’re also a proud member of the DaVinci Masterpiece Contractor Program and we were awarded several Angie’s List Super Service Awards.”

Securing and keeping talented tradesmen

No project gets off the ground without the right team and Watson says Exterior Medics goes to great lengths to find, secure and keep the best in the business. “We’re big on cultivating a strong company culture,” he says. “We have employee appreciation days. We take our staff out to big group, full-day outings such as breakfast and a sporting event, bowling and open bar and a dinner buffet and much more. We do this on a group and individual basis, recognizing individual efforts and making sure we say thank you.”
