BMY Construction Group Inc.

Celebrating 10 years of diversified service in central California

2014 marks 10 years and a decade of successfully executed projects and satisfied commercial, medical, institutional, educational and industrial clients for BMY Construction Group Inc. (BMY). The Fresno-based company was established in 2004 to offer a better, more complete general contracting experience for public and private agencies in California’s Central Valley.

“We’re diversified in the public and private market,” shares Eric Bower, president of BMY. “Our competitors do one or the other, but we’re not a private sector or a public works only company. And no matter the market, we assure our clients that when they’re working with BMY, they can rest assured there’s a principal or owner involved on every job. Most projects have me or Steve Mitchell, co-owner of BMY, involved from start to finish.”

Bower, Mitchell and Russell Yemoto established BMY in 2004 with just nine employees. “Together, our names form BMY,” shares Bower. Sadly, Yemoto passed away; however, Bower and Mitchell remain partners and equal owners of BMY, continuing what the trio started years ago. Since its inception, BMY has nearly tripled in size backed by the decades of experience Bower and Mitchell bring to the table.

Divide and conquer

BMY has achieved rapid growth by catering to a diverse range of clients throughout central California and offering a broader selection of capabilities than the average general contractor. “We’ve been able to really hit the ground running due to our diverse capabilities,” explains Bower.

BMY’s extra capabilities have propelled the company to success in multiple markets. The company’s portfolio covers everything from retail facilities to religious institutions, commercial office space to industrial manufacturing facilities, educational sites and LEED-certified buildings.

“We’re now up to 25 employees,” notes Bower. BMY’s professionals are knowledgeable in rough and finish carpentry, as well as concrete, insulated paneling and pre-engineered metal buildings. “We’re also experienced in medical health care projects with California Office of Statewide Health and Planning Development [COSHPD] experienced professionals on staff,” adds Bower. Bower estimates that BMY has completed two veterinary facilities since its incorporation and also over a dozen medical offices to its portfolio.

The company prides itself on maintaining the flexibility to collaborate well with a variety of clients and construction professionals in an ethical, service-oriented fashion. From classrooms to communications towers, retail additions to a TV station remodel, BMY runs the gamut in size and scope of project delivery.

A restoration with a story

In 2012, BMY commenced a restoration project at the Fawcett House, designed and built in 1959 by world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. “We completed a year’s worth of full restorations,” shares Bower. “This was an exceptionally interesting project due to the backstory.”

The 3,800-square-foot residential property in Los Banos, Calif., which sits on 80 acres of farm land, needed to be livable and comfortable in a modern setting without eliminating the features designed by one of America’s most well-known architects. BMY joined Dyson, the project architect, as well as other construction experts from the Central Valley area to successfully complete the new owner’s wishes.

Teams refurbished existing wood, stucco and plaster that had lost its luster and needed to be repaired. Some of Wright’s original drawings were utilized to fabricate a large Cherokee-red kettle in the home’s huge fireplace. In addition, a forecourt was originally designed, but never constructed. Utilizing the original blueprints, BMY constructed a raised forecourt landscape area that included a block wall and waterfall fountain.

From aesthetics to functional infrastructure, the home’s plumbing, wiring and mechanical systems also needed to be replaced. The heating and cooling system was upgraded and the roof, which posed a challenge for restoration crews, was pulled apart and stabilized.

Other recent projects have led BMY from the residential sector to commercial, educational and retail markets as the company continues to extend wide ranging capabilities. “We completed a full TV station remodel for KSEE24 [Nexstar Broadcasting Group] as they combined two stations into one building all while remaining completely operational and doing on-air broadcasts,” reveals Bower.

After many decades in the industry, Bower has also had the opportunity to see some of his work come full circle. “Before starting BMY 10 years ago, I helped perform a unique building for La Plaza Bakery & Grille in Greenfield, Calif.,” he notes. “Today, BMY has had a hand in current remodels and additions and we have done some beautiful work.”

Over the last year, BMY has also invested time and resources into its own facilities. “We just moved into our new offices and it’s a huge improvement,” shares Bower. “Right now, as far as volume, we remain about the same as recent years, but there’s a great deal of neat work on the horizon for us.” BMY Construction Group Inc. continues to deliver an expanse of services and capabilities in support of numerous clients throughout Fresno and beyond.
