APS Supply Company Inc.

35 years of family-owned and -operated concrete and masonry supply

Beginning as a construction equipment and supply company specializing in concrete and masonry accessories, APS Supply Company Inc. has been serving the construction industry since 1980. The operation was expanded in 1984 when the company began manufacturing a full line of expansion joints specializing in standard and self-expanding cork. Located in Beverly, New Jersey, APS has more than 100 distributors nationwide and its products have been sold in every state in the country.

Don Lewis, president of APS, credits his company’s success to its dedication to customer service. “Our clients stick with us because we are able to meet their needs on a regular basis,” says Don. “We pride ourselves on always getting the job done right the first time.” APS was founded by Don’s father, Stan Lewis, and his partner, Paul Longsdorf. Don grew up surrounded by the family business and began working for the company during school vacations. When he was 20 years old, he began working for the company full time and purchased the business from his father in 2009.

A family tradition

In 2002, APS began rebar fabrication as an added-value service for its customers. Within a couple of years, this grew into a full-fledged rebar operation serving the state of New Jersey as well as the greater Philadelphia market. Working in the commercial sector, APS supplies large jobs, such as educational institutions, apartment buildings and parking garages. “Our bread and butter work is the school projects,” Don explains. “Those are the types of jobs that really fit our niche because there are a lot of masonry products required for that type of construction.”APS Supply Company

In surviving the economic downturn, APS relied on its strong reputation and customer service to pull the company through the recession. By maintaining solid customer relations, the payoff has proven to be worth it. “Those were times when I told everybody that we’re going to have to work twice as hard for half as much,” he says. “We still took care of our customers and employees through the tough economic times and they have remembered that.”

A quality that was instilled in Don as he grew up in the family business was to take pride in the work that he does. This is an aspect that is present throughout the company as APS has maintained strong employee retention in its more than 35 years in business. “Fortunately we have a lot of people here who take pride in what they do,” says Don. “When you do the right thing for the customer you are able to leave with a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.”

In creating a comfortable work environment, Don has been able to provide a certain level of empathy to his employees. Throughout his career he insisted on being treated as an employee and received no special treatment due to being the owner’s son. “I knew that if I was going to run the company someday, I needed to earn the respect of my colleagues,” he recalls. “Earning respect is something that has rubbed off on all of our employees as well.” Since purchasing the company, Don has maintained his office in a central location of the company’s facility, which enables him to remain involved in the day-to-day operations. “I’m still available to interact with my employees as well as my customers on a daily basis.”

High-profile projects

Recent projects that APS has been involved with include the MC Montclair, a 148-room luxury boutique hotel in Montclair, New Jersey. APS supplied concrete and masonry elements to the project. Included in the hotel’s plans are a farm-to-table restaurant, a rooftop bar with unparalleled views of Manhattan and a six-story parking garage. Additional plans call for 13,000 square feet of chic event space and meeting rooms, including a state-of-the-art conference center.

APS was also involved with the construction of Equinox 360, a luxury high-rise condominium development in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The project includes 11,000 square feet of amenities that will serve the community, including a heated pool, a yoga room, an outdoor plaza and a media lounge with a big-screen television and wireless connectivity.

While APS is successfully maintaining its rebar business, the company is looking grow that aspect of the company. Through continued updating of equipment and technology, APS will increase its production while maintaining steady growth.

With a rich history of more than 35 years supplying the construction industry, APS Supply Company Inc. remains a leader in the supply of concrete and masonry accessories and rebar fabrication in the Northeast as well as expansion joints throughout the country.
