Andy Weinrub and Chuck Scalzott, owner and president of Vytex Corporation (Vytex), respectively, know a thing or two about windows. The duo brings more than 75 years of window manufacturing and installation experience to Vytex. “Andy and I are both very hands on and we always have our ears open, tuning into what our customers want,” says Chuck. Since 1988 Andy and Chris’ dedication to customers, quality products, friendly service and a driven team of employees has allowed the Maryland-based company to achieve huge success.

Vytex was incorporated over a quarter century ago in Beltsville, Md. The company was founded on the basis of manufacturing the highest quality residential window product backed by expert craftsmanship, swift installation and second-to-none customer service. Over the past two decades, Vytex has earned a reputation as one of the top 100 window manufactures in the country and a leader in the mid-Atlantic region.

“We have always manufactured energy-efficient residential windows,” reveals Chuck. “Several years ago, we entered what we term the commercial market manufacturing our energy-efficient products for multifamily apartments, condominiums and senior citizen housing.” We’re more than a manufacturer. We install 80 percent of our products and follow up after the installation to make sure our customers happy with the result; that’s what sets us apart.”

Today, Vytex is based in Laurel, Md., with an additional warehouse in Cleveland. “Our market is the Baltimore, Washington, DC metro areas, as well as Virginia, the Carolina’s, Georgia and northern Ohio,” Chuck adds.

The Best in the Business

“We manufacture about 100,000 windows a year and we’re installing about 80,000 of them,” shares Chuck. However, Chuck admits Vytex’s sizable operation wouldn’t run smoothly and efficiently without 150 dedicated employees.

The Vytex team is united by a trust in each other and the best possible machinery capable of producing some of the highest quality windows and doors in the industry. Through constant cross-training, Vytex continuously challenges its employees, keeping them motivated and involved. “Everyone knows they play a significant role in helping the company make the manufacturing process safer and more productive,” notes Chuck. “They know their opinions are important in the decision making process.”

The company’s state-of-the-art 160,000-square-foot manufacturing plant is equipped with the latest in window production technology, which is controlled and monitored by Winsys software. The software provides an outstanding level of control in scheduling, manufacturing and shipping, guaranteeing that 100 percent of the scheduled production is completed each day.

However, this expertise didn’t develop overnight. Over several years, Vytex has invested millions in the addition of several multiprofile cutting stations, sash fabrication centers, CNC corner cleaners, quad-stack four-point welders and VyCore foam filling equipment to enhance production. The plant also turns out more than 100 colors of exterior coatings.

“In 2012, we won the Crystal Achievement Award for the most innovative manufacturing plant,” reveals Chuck. “We’ve worked to earn it. All of our products are also Energy Star-certified. There’s really no way a window comes out of here that’s not Energy Star rated.”

Expert Installations

Over the years, Vytex has expanded its installations into the multifamily commercial market as well as assisted-living and senior citizen homes. “We can do anything from one window to three or four thousand windows all measured and installed,” adds Chuck.

In Rockville, Md., the company recently completed a $1.2 million installation at the Halpine Apartment complex. “Every morning we were in there literally destroying an outside wall, rebuilding it and installing windows all before 5 p.m. when tenants came home,” recalls Chuck. “We replaced decks, railing and storefronts too, which we haven’t done previously, but we did it because we’ll fill the bill for whatever the client needs.”

“The Crown Farm project was another giant for us, consisting over two buildings with retail space and four stories of apartments and condos,” continues Chuck. “We supplied more than 3,500 windows in numerous colors and multiple configurations. Our portion will be done in late August 2013, but it will be another eight months or so before they’re ready for occupancy.”

Although Vytex remains busy, Chuck admits the economy had slowed progress a bit. “Like other companies, we had to make changes to sustain the business; you do what you’ve got to do to get by,” he says. “However, what we did differently was when everyone else was thinning their product line, we went the other route.”

Chuck and the team are confident in their ability. “We’re going to continue to do what we do; we have our niche,” adds Chuck. “The most important thing is to react to what our customers need; we’re constantly trying to make things better for them.” After 25 years in business, Vytex Corporation has established itself as an innovative manufacturer and installer, in tune with each customer.
