The Miller-Clapperton Partnership Inc.

37 years of metal fabrication and installation in the Southeast

The Miller-Clapperton Partnership Inc. is one of the largest providers of engineered façade cladding in the United States and beyond. Headquartered in Austell, Georgia, Miller-Clapperton consistently provides value to building owners, architects and contractors throughout the country utilizing aluminum composite material (ACM), metal composite material (MCM) and high-pressure laminate (HPL).

Founded in 1979 by Ted Miller and Dave Clapperton, Miller-Clapperton was established when the two partners decided to leave the metal fabrication company where they were employed. “They were not treated very well by the parent company they were working for,” says Zeke Miller, president of Miller-Clapperton. “They decided that they would rather risk everything than continue to be mistreated.”

Initially, Miller-Clapperton began as a group of independent sales representatives and eventually shifted into the brokering of installation packages. As the company steadily grew, the late ‘80s saw Miller-Clapperton enter into the fabrication of MCM and transform itself from a manufacturers’ representative into a fabricating representative or in Miller’s words, “a national fabricator and regional installer.”

The quality and integrity that Miller-Clapperton provides to its clients is something that has been instilled in the company philosophy since its inception. “When you have those qualities, people find you and want you to be involved in their projects,” says Miller. The company strives to keep itself ahead of the curve in technological advances to be a leader in industry. “It has never been just one thing; it is the accumulation of many small things that create momentum,” Miller adds. “It’s a matter of staying current with the day-to-day innovations.”

The entire range of products that Miller-Clapperton produces is highly engineered. With detailed shop drawings, the company pays close attention to details and identifies any possible issues before they arise. “Many times we will go the extra mile to take care of our customers without them even realizing it,” Miller explains.

One step ahead

In the metal construction industry, many companies turn to the same suppliers for materials. In its involvement with the Metal Construction Association (MCA), Miller-Clapperton creates value-added points where other metal fabricators and installers may fall short. “We’re involved in things that the MCA is also a part of that keep us on the tip of the spear in the marketplace,” says Miller. “It helps us to make the industry better by keeping up with code changes and energy efficiency. We choose to set the pace rather than be a company trying to keep up with the industry.”

Miller-Clapperton’s involvement with MCA allows the company to communicate with and maintain personal relationships with the decision makers among its vendors. Miller also says the networking aspect of the association is invaluable. “It may cost $6,000 to send a few guys to an event but just by learning one small thing, your return on investment could potentially produce exponential results.”

A majority of Miller-Clapperton’s revenue is generated from regional installation, which also includes the fabrication of its own panels. In 2015, the company opened a manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona, with the purpose of providing other western subcontractors with fabricated materials. In addition, Miller-Clapperton established an office in Virginia, in order to service its growing customer base in the mid-Atlantic region.

As its business becomes regionally based, Miller-Clapperton will continue to grow and expand its services and markets. “As we enter densely-populated markets, we’re going to have to open new offices in those regions so we can establish ourselves as a local company,” shares Miller. “We want to be able to hire local people and be a part of the community.”

With the growth that Miller-Clapperton is experiencing, the company is currently undergoing a rebranding effort. By establishing a full-time marketing position, branding efforts will include a new corporate logo and establishing brand positioning within the industry. While one of the only constant aspects of the construction industry is change, the quality and integrity that built the foundation for The Miller-Clapperton Partnership Inc. will remain the same and steer the company into the future.
