In the wake of damaging wind, rain, hail, flooding, fire and any number of other unfortunate, uncontrollable circumstances, Testerman Restoration is a reliable emergency restorations contractor based in Knoxville, Tennessee. Acting as a liaison between the insured and a range of insurance providers, Testerman specializes in alleviating the headaches and uncertainty involved in the restoration process from the initial claim all the way through project completion.
“We are a preferred contractor for many insurance companies, including State Farm, Erie Insurance, Westfield Insurance, Allstate and many more,” notes Ben Testerman, founder and president of Testerman. “We act as a liaison throughout the whole process: scoping the damage, working with the adjuster to ensure all damage is paid for and being advocates for the insured which eases the burden on the residence or commercial property owner.”
Hard work on and off the court
Ben established Testerman in 1988 after playing on the professional tennis circuit for eight years. He was ranked first in the world as a junior player and achieved a 19th overall world ranking, earning 21 national titles throughout his professional career.
The same dedication and perseverance he brought to the tennis court have carried over into his career as a builder. “My family has been in the building industry forever,” says Ben. “I grew up watching my father and uncles work in the industry so it was a natural fit, but I never thought about it until I got out of tennis.”
Ben’s building career began in residential construction as a custom homebuilder. “We started in single-family homes, just doing a couple at a time, but that evolved into custom home building and eventually Testerman emerged as a premier high-end customer builder in greater Knoxville,” says Ben.
A new strategy
When the recession hit in 2008 and the custom home building market nearly disappeared, Ben knew he needed to refocus Testerman. “Although we’ve been in business since 1988, we didn’t get into the restoration side of the business until the economy went south,” recounts Ben. “Restoration is a niche that intrigued me and something I had always wanted to get involved in. The recession was just the push we needed and I knew it would be a good fit with the rest of the business.”
Since launching this aspect of the business, restoration has been Testerman’s primary focus. The company now restores a range of area homes and commercial buildings throughout 18 counties in eastern Tennessee.
Testerman delivers water mitigation services, content preservation and smoke and fire clean up, as well as foundation work, framing, exterior windows and doors, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. The company also works with insulation, Sheetrock, interior/exterior painting, trim, cabinets and countertops, flooring, roofing, siding, masonry, utilities, irrigation landscaping and much more. Residential or commercial construction -Testerman can take care of the job with the highest quality, communication and customer care.
“We utilize subcontractors to offer such a broad scope of services – anything the customer needs to get the repairs done,” says Ben. “We have a lot of great working relationships with area subs – from electricians to plumbers and framers – who have been with us for a long time.”
Speedy solutions and guidance
As a solutions-oriented company, Testerman is on-call 24/7. The company delivers a rapid response within 30 minutes of the initial contact call from the insurance provider. The goal is to have owners back in their home or business as quickly as possible and Testerman accomplishes this through a nine-step process:
- The initial call is received from the insurance company.
- Testerman responds 24/7 to the insured within 30 minutes.
- Testerman estimators and production managers set up a meeting with the insured to assess the damage.
- A Testerman estimator prepares an estimate and submits it to the insurance company within three days.
- Testerman works with the insurance adjuster to approve the estimate.
- The contract is signed and work begins.
- Testerman regularly touches base throughout the entire process with the home/business owner to ensure complete customer satisfaction.
- The job is completed.
- Testerman follows up with the home/business owner to make sure excellence is achieved and the company reaches out with a customer satisfaction survey. All warrantee concerns are taken care of at this time.
Testerman has been handling insurance claims for more than six years and has worked with hundreds of clients. “One project that really stands out is the Braude building – a major restoration after a fire in Knoxville’s historic district,” says Ben. “We have even completed a home restoration after a tornado lifted the home right off the foundation. This was a rapid turnaround project which we completed in 45 to 60 days.”
Communication builds trust
No matter the size and scope of the restoration project, Ben says it comes down to quality, efficiency and communication. “Quality is obviously important and having things done in a timely manner, which is where we excel, but effective communication throughout the whole process is also key and it helps alleviate some of the stress and anxiety associated with a restoration job,” he explains.
Ben says he’s a lucky guy to work with the Testerman team. “Oftentimes, you spend more time with the people you work with than your family,” he says. “But every day is a gift when you get to work with great people.”
Now that the company has found a strong footing in the restoration market, Ben says Testerman will stay the course for years to come, continuing to build on its trusted reputation. When time is of the essence, home and business owners in greater Knoxville know they can depend on Testerman Restoration for a rapid, reliable response.
