Tanen Homes was originally founded by Nathan and Melvin Tanen in 1956. Together, the brothers oversaw every detail of their projects from site development to the design and construction of all homes. In 1982, the company name was changed to Tanco Construction Co. when Nathan’s two sons, Joel Tanen and Harry Tanen, took over the company.

Together, Joel and Harry have been able to distinguish Tanen Homes as a premier custom homebuilder by adding their own personal touch to every job. “We thoroughly inspect all of our properties personally,” Joel explains. “We hire subcontractors to do the work, but we don’t rely on third-party field inspectors. We make sure everything is done the way it should be.”

Working primarily in the residential market, Tanen Homes also completes commercial build-outs. With its own floor plans and home models as a template, each design is customized to every client’s specifications at no extra charge. A customizable plan

Tanen Homes bases the design of its projects on a series of three in-house floor plans: Aruba, Dahlia and Equestrian. The Aruba series is spacious with high coffered ceilings, a large kitchen with island, exceptional cabinet space and a walk-in pantry. The Aruba is a split-plan design with a completely private master suite and guest suite on opposite sides of the house.

Designed for family living, the Dahlia offers all of the modern amenities of the Aruba series on a smaller scale. The split plan offers the private master suite on one side with a choice of three or four bedrooms on the garage side of the house.

The Equestrian Series presents two options to clients: Preakness and Triple Crown. Designed for privacy and entertaining, the equestrian features formal media, study, living room, dining room and bar with a butler’s pantry off the large, full-amenity kitchen. Marble and wood flooring complement the decorative ceilings. The design also includes a master suite with his and her baths, a dressing area and large master closets and a courtyard patio-accessible guest house.

With all of the comforts and amenities for modern living, the Triple Crown offers high decorative ceilings, a large master suite with sitting area, large secondary bedrooms, 5.5 baths and a four-car garage. A pool and patio with a summer kitchen are also included in the design.

Tanen Homes recently completed a home that was based on the Aruba Series floor plan. Joel and Harry worked with the client to draft 23 different versions of the home until the client was satisfied. The end result was a 4,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home with a three-car garage. “The home was very modernized with technology and the latest building trends,” says Joel. “The countertops were all quartz and they utilized a lot of white and gray cabinetry and a flat tile roof. The home is set up so that the owner can operate everything from his smartphone.”

Great relationships build the business

As a general contracting company, Tanen Homes relies on its strong network of subcontractors that it has established solid relationships with over many years of working together. “We will wait for a certain subcontractor to become available for a project if we need to,” says Joel. “We prefer to do that, because that way we know it will be done right the first time and the quality will be up to our standards. All of our subs get paid before we do.”
