SCQ Construction offers much more than meets the eye. The California-based company offers the complete package, including placing construction aggregates, engineered fill, recycling asphalt and concrete, as well as the processing of clean fill. The company boasts four locations across the state, including Cupertino, Sunnyvale, San Juan Bautista and Sunol, to ensure all clients’ needs are met.

SCQ Construction is just one division within the umbrella of Stevens Creek Quarry Inc. (SCQ), with the other members of the SCQ family being SCQ Rents, Broom Service and SCQ Water Trucks. Although SCQ has been doing business since 1939, many people are still surprised when they see we’re more than a quarry and that we have an array of capabilities. For a small sized company, SCQ Construction is quite diversified.

A Wide Range of Capabilities

SCQ Construction has been in operation since 1980. What really sets SCQ Construction apart is the company’s access to in-house material and wide scope of work. The company specializes in earth movement and mass excavation, but also provides grading, concrete, some underground and asphalt paving services.

The majority of SQC Construction’s work is within Santa Clara County and the South Bay regions of San Francisco. The company’s various plants, which include the recycled concrete and rock operations, allow for self-sufficiency.

Although earth movement and mass excavation is the company’s forte, SCQ Construction have in-house construction capabilities, including road widening, parking lot construction, retaining walls, demolition, storm repair, creek restoration and all kinds of site civil work. The company has access to aggregate base and finish rock from its quarry, which is used for foundations and preliminary ground work. SCQ Construction works well with its partner subcontractors, which include paving, underground wet utility piping to finish landscaping.

Protecting the Environment

SCQ Construction provides valuable erosion and soil control solutions and is frequently involved in a range of environmental projects. One of the most interesting projects the company has been involved with is the Alum Rock Fish Passage, which was a joint project between the city of San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. Before the company created step pools, the creek’s population of Steelhead fish had difficulty moving up stream.

Through the design of the VTA Organization, SCQ Construction provided a way for the fish to move through the creek, reaching breading and hatching grounds necessary to maintain the population. A great deal of erosion remediation work was done to make graduated pools were established to meet the new design. The project required cooperation between various state and federal agencies, from the Department of Fish and Game to the Army Corp of Engineers.

A second creek renovation project that SCQ Construction is presently involved with is the Stevens Creek Corridor Park and Restoration, phase two, right in Cupertino, Calif. The project is very environmentally sensitive, as well with all the native protected species that live in and around the creek. Both projects had and have a critical schedule deadline of Oct. 15, which marks the start of the rainy season.

SCQ Construction performed numerous levy remediation projects to protect shorelines from erosion. The company has also performed the grading for the new city of Santa Clara parking structure directly across from the new San Francisco 49’ers football stadium along with the grading for the Mission substation, which will help power the NFL-sized stadium.

Although SCQ has access to a wealth of its own material and a range of in-house capabilities, the company still relies on strong relationships with subcontractors. Many in construction know it’s a must to have close relationships with other contractors and suppliers to be successful. Over the years, the company has built a base of trusted subcontractors SCQ Construction can count on.

Despite the downturn and a competitive market, SCQ Construction is focused on slow, steady growth. The team believes that the nice thing about construction is if a company diversifies, growth can be achieved. Though the company is not trying to be an industry giant, diversifying has helped SCQ Construction greatly.

The company continues to grow through an expanding client list, as SCQ Construction wants to work with good people and build relationships. Since 1939 Stevens Creek Quarry Inc. has served the Bay Area with diversified service and material.
