Scott Equipment was established in 1939, and it has been all about the people ever since. While the company was originally founded as Scott Truck and Tractor, the company’s focus remains the same: keeping customers and employees happy.

Scott Equipment has a rich history, as its original Monroe-based designation was an agricultural dealership. Scott Truck and Tractor had a total of 10 employees, including founders Tom and Mayme Scott. “Back in the day, they literally took mules as trades,” details Joey Reeves, vice president and branch manager of the St. Rose Construction location. “We have been involved with the agricultural side in the past; however, we have since focused our energy on construction, crane, and material handling.”

Today the company is heavily focused in the construction and industrial markets, including crane and material handling.

While Scott Equipment’s main target market being large business contractors, the company also aims to please other small business owners. Now with nearly 600 employees and 24 locations spread across seven states, Scott Equipment is making its mark on the industry.

Above all else, the family-run company has one objective: pleasing people. Even after being with the company for 17 years, Reeves is thrilled at Scott Equipment’s ability to support each customer, especially after the sale, in addition to supporting the company’s employees.

“The biggest asset at our company is our people,” Reeves says proudly. “Everyone has a comparable product; at Scott Equipment it is our personnel that allow us to outperform the competition, because we focus on meeting the needs of the customer on multiple levels, helping them to achieve a solution whether it is sales, rentals, service or parts related.”

Scott Equipment

Heavy-duty commitment

After 75 years Scott Equipment is still enjoying its family ownership, with Scott Cummins, current president, proudly leading the way. Just as his grandfather did, Cummins continues to push his employees to provide the highest quality of customer service achievable; it is evident he takes his legacy seriously. It is not just Cummins’ commitment to his family, but he truly embraces his loyalty to the company itself.

It is this dedication to customer service and providing the best of the best that has awarded Scott Equipment numerous big-name clients. The company has worked with major manufacturers in construction, including Volvo, Case and Kobelco; in material handling, including Toyota; and in cranes, including Link Belt and Tadano. The company prefers to maintain relationships with close-knit vendors to ensure the highest quality.

The company’s breakdown of equipment comprises: construction, including articulated trucks, backhoe loaders, excavators, excavator-compacts, excavator-amphibious, motor graders, wheel loaders, rock drills, compactors, telehandlers, sweepers, water trucks and more; as well as cranes, crane trucks and various types of forklifts.

Scott Equipment prides itself on providing whatever it is a client needs, which is why the company employs 200 factory-trained technicians, each of whom take great pride in getting jobs done quickly and efficiently. The Scott Equipment team offers welding, repairs and everything in between.

Whether tackling a basic tune-up or a complex job, clients can count on the Scott Equipment team to deliver. Furthermore, the team also offers call-out service around the clock to ensure no customer is left hanging.

The company provides preventative maintenance, as well as other agreements, to ensure customers’ costs stay low and the possibility of downtime is reduced. Scott Equipment also provides equipment inspections and insurance quotes, because it is all about the people and safety is a huge component of successful companies in the construction industry.

Due to the team’s commitment to safety, Scott Equipment takes it a step further by offering heavy machinery operations training. If formal training is required, Scott Equipment is happy to arrange more comprehensive training directly with the manufacturer. The company also provides OSHA Crane Certification, which can be conducted yearly.

Digging deep

While Reeves notes there is not anything routine about a day in the construction industry, he clearly enjoys what he and the Scott Equipment team are able to provide. However, there are, as with any industry, challenges to overcome. “One of our major challenges is keeping up with the technology and ever changing regulations in our industry,” Reeves details.

Nonetheless, Cummins, Reeves and the Scott Equipment team are pressing forward. “I foresee steady growth over the next several years,” Reeves details. No matter how much growth the company endures, it will remain about the people. “People are important,” Reeves reiterates.

It is evident that the Scott Equipment team is ready and able to tackle the ever-changing needs of its clients. Celebrating the company’s 75-year anniversary is a milestone of its own; however, the team is more excited to continue offering people – employees, clients and the community alike – the best of the best; it is all about the people at Scott Equipment. With a booming industry at its back, Scott Equipment has a bright future.
