REX Electric & Technologies is a full -service electrical contractor and design/build technology provider that serves general contractors and building owners across a wide swath of industries in the Midwest and in other markets. On the contractor side, REX serves general contractors in everything from ground up projects, to intricate tenant improvement projects, such as the build out for a leading financial institution with Leopardo Construction Company. For building owners and operators, the REX team provides a 24/7 commitment on virtually unlimited electrical and low voltage services on an ongoing basis. In addition, for businesses and high-end homeowners, the REX team provides the latest technology in audiovisual and systems integration.
What Sets REX Apart
“It is all about our relationship with our clients. We have their vision and their business goals in mind. The REX office and field team works in partnership with clients and this highly collaborative, cost effective approach to our client’s work distinguishes our service,” notes Dominic Sergi, REX Chief Executive Officer. “We listen very carefully to our clients, make sure we understand their strategic goals and then we go the extra mile to help them achieve their objectives.”
“REX gets the job done right,” says Joshua Smith, Senior Project Manager for Turner Construction. “They are our eyes and ears on the job site, and they think on our behalf. They are a trusted partner.”
Professionalism and Leadership
REX is known as the go-to full service electrical contractor that provides the latest in innovative thinking with nearly a century of experience.
“My family started this business in 1921 and for many years it was a small electrical contracting firm serving the commercial electrical market. After graduating from trade school in 1979, and serving in many roles at REX, from apprentice, to general foreman, to leading the company as CEO, I am so proud of the confidence that our clients have in REX and how that has brought us to where we are today,” Sergi said.
REX now employs more than 450 and has sales of $100 million, Sergi said. “We owe our success to this eminently sensible business standard: We are driven to understand our clients’ business, their vision and their needs and we are unrelenting in creating the right solutions to help them achieve their goals.”
REX Technology Services
Sergi’s desire to continuously improve the quality and quantity of services REX provides clients led him to develop the Technology Division in the early 1990s. In 2013, he added significantly to this Division by acquiring Integrisys, a design/build technology company known for its prowess in the audio/visual systems arena.
“We saw the addition of Integrisys as a natural extension of the services we provide to our general contractor and building management clients,” Sergi said. “So often our clients spend millions of dollars on a build out and hire another contractor to install high end audio/visual systems, only to find that the pricey system doesn’t work because of the way the building was wired. By adding the Integrisys team to our existing expertise, REX is now one of the largest systems integrators in the Midwest and we can guarantee excellent functionality.”
Integrisys co-founders Brad Weintraub, George Velazquez and Eric Wolfram, are among the best known A/V systems experts in the industry and they have added significant depth to REX’s Technology Division, which we continue to grow, noted Joseph M. Sergi, REX Senior Vice President and head of the Technology Division. Joe is Dominic’s son and has been with the company since 2009.
REX Building Services
Similarly, the senior Sergi started REX’s Building Services (RBS) Division in 2008, to provide continuous electrical services to clients who built, improved the tenant space or who needed maintenance contract for all of their electrical needs. REX Building Services provides the same encyclopedic spectrum of services as its parent company, but it serves tenants, property managers, building engineers, energy groups, HVAC contractors, business owners and other end users directly. In addition, RBS provides testing and analysis for all firm clients, working to troubleshoot and prevent power problems. In addition, the RBS Division handles lighting retrofits.
RBS is directed by Patrick Lancaster, Senior Vice President, who joined REX to start up RBS. Patrick, an entrepreneur who started his own company at age 20, is a strong proponent of the client service excellence that underpins REX.
“We pride ourselves on knowing our clients’ buildings at least as well as they do. We want our client to rest assured that RBS technicians are available 24/7,” Patrick notes. His focus on uncompromising standards, superior craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail, and second-to-none client satisfaction, has led to exponential growth in RBS since its inception.
RBS provides all types of diagnostic testing for disaster avoidance, including infrared electrical inspection. In addition, the division has a fully equipped service fleet of more than 30 vans, including 60-foot boom trucks, and a highly trained staff to handle all types of electrical needs indoors or out.
Safety
REX has a reputation for been a leader in safety programs and is one of only seven Chicagoland contractors of any discipline selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Labor administered OSHA Challenge Pilot Program.
In addition, every REX employee received mandatory safety training. For clients, REX offers continuing safety education including special training in the 30-hour OSHA Construction course, and a number of courses in other areas including asbestos, and ARC Flash Protection, for which REX is an industry leader.
Many REX clients have touted the company’s emphasis on safety. One General Contractor noted, “Safety is of paramount importance to us. Because REX is so well-known for having the best in class safety program, we asked them to help us design our own safety education curriculum. Now we, too, are among the best in class.”
Markets REX Serves
Construction
“With a thorough understanding of the complexities of electrical systems, REX is in a unique position to provide the knowledge and experience at the outset of a project, whether it is new out-of-ground construction, renovation or remodeling,” noted Mike Segreti, REX President and Chief Financial Officer. “We are relationship-focused and our team works collaboratively with the GC and all other subcontractors and business partners of our client.”
Tenant Improvement
REX Executive Vice President of Operation, Mike Bosco, notes that the company has long been a leader in this area for all types of commercial clients. “Our projects are fast-paced and present unique challenges, and we are experienced in virtually every industry, from professional services firms to furniture showrooms,” Bosco said.
Mission Critical Data Centers
Mission Critical resiliency is of utmost importance in today’s world. REX serves a broad spectrum of industries in mission critical work, including higher education, medical, data center and others. “We are proud to have met the extremely high standards of these most scrutinizing mission critical clients,” notes Bosco. He said that REX handles the build-outs, the upgrades and the maintenance for many major data centers.
Healthcare
“With the 78-million strong baby boomer generation flooding the senior care market, there is a demand for everything from assisted living facilities to medical technology innovation centers,” Bosco notes. “REX has assisted clients with a wide array of healthcare electrical needs, from CT scan and MRI rooms to operating centers and ICU facilities.”
Schools and Universities
Another strong arena for REX’s electrical installations and technology systems integration has been educational institutions – from colleges and universities such as Columbia University and DePaul University in Chicago to elementary and high schools. REX’s team of educational technology and lighting experts has designed solutions to enhance a wide variety of learning environments, noted Bosco. REX also has worked with museums on a number of interactive educational displays and exhibits.
Luxury Residential
In addition to installing high end audio visual systems, lighting and other controls in offices, REX installs built-in technology for luxury residential properties, including high rises and estates. George Velazquez, Senior Vice President for the REX Technology Division, and Integrisys co-founder, notes that “REX takes the frustration and confusion out of choosing and installing such systems. We make it simple. Through a consultative process, we will design, install and support a solution that is customized to your needs.”
Core Values
“We have a wealth of talent in our ranks,” Sergi Sr. notes, “and I don’t just mean our management team. Every one of our employees plays a big role in our success.” He noted that the company has long had core values which the REX Team champions. These include:
- Conduct Business with Trust and Integrity: Through honesty and fairness, we build strong, mutually‐trusting relationships with customers, vendors and employees. We judge our success on the longevity of these relationships.
- Deliver the Best in Customer Service: “Total Customer Satisfaction” is our mantra. Our success is based upon honoring our commitments and giving customers solutions in a responsive and professional manner. Every time.
- Deal Fairly with Vendors: We believe in fairness. This means that the lowest quotes on bid day result in purchase orders. We believe in paying on time and strive to be our vendors’ best customer.
- Promote Safety: We work hard to ensure that safety is a continuing priority for our customers, field crews and supporting personnel.
- Support Our People: We aim to hire and keep the best employees. We provide a positive environment, challenging opportunities and a share in the success of the business.
- Employ Sound Business Judgment: Through planning and management, we make decisions that sustain the financial strength and profitability necessary to be an industry leader.
- Share Our Success with the Community: We share our success through monetary donations and employee participation in events within the communities where REX employees live and work.
“We have been very fortunate in our success so far, and we look forward to growing, along with our clients,” Sergi said.
