Pyramid Electrical Contractors Inc.
Pyramid Electrical Contractors Inc. (PEC) is a diverse electrical and telecommunications contractor based in Fairview Heights, Ill. Founded in 1982, the business has grown for more than three decades incorporating changing technology and high-efficiency practices. Ken Keeney, CEO, incorporated the business after working for former owners for more than a year. Keeney remains dedicated to providing quality services in the region while supporting the industry through involvement with the Illinois Chapter of National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
“The educational benefits of our NECA membership keep us informed of all industry changes, new technology and offer business-related classes,” Keeney explains. “Anything we need, NECA has. We have access to tools that help us build our business. I can’t say enough about them as an organization.”
Through the trade organization, PEC works side by side with other regional electrical contractors. “We are in direct competition with them so that can be a unique situation,” Keeney notes. “Our members are good about putting that aside. You could be in a meeting with someone who just beat you out of a $5 million job; he’s happy and you’re not. It all comes around the next time when it’s the opposite situation. As a whole, when we are together, everyone has their NECA hat on. The organization helps with any concerns, question or needs you have and a lot of the time, the guy next to you has the same problem. When you’re at that table, you are sitting with your brothers.”
Putting knowledge into practice
With the support of several strong trade organizations, PEC has evolved into a diverse and highly qualified contractor. The company has been involved in commercial, residential, industrial and public work over the years. PEC’s portfolio includes: telecommunications, highway lighting, traffic signals, solar projects and even wind generation.
“One of the advantages of our company is that we are so diversified,” Keeney says. “We can’t say no to anything electrical. We have a great team and we have been able to make adjustments to meet the changing needs of this industry.”
With a reputation for taking on unique and challenging work, PEC has been involved in a wide range of electrical projects in recent years. The team is involved in a series of ongoing contracts for Lindenwood University. The school has a satellite campus in nearby Belleville, Ill., where PEC has been involved in major renovations.
“Over the last 10 years, the school has built new facilities and upgraded the existing buildings,” Keeney elaborates. “We have done several projects there over the last 10 years. We most recently did the new dormitory, a former hotel that the school purchased to renovate to house student athletes. We have done sports fields and rehabilitated the visitors’ center, as well. We are proud to be part of it for what it has done for that section of Belleville; this is a very exciting development.”
The team has also been working on a project for the Transportation Command facility at the Scott Air Force Base (SAFB). The command center tracks everything within the four branches of the military that moves. Whether by ship, airplane or truck, the facility utilizes high-tech telecommunications connections to track movement. Another recent project for SAFB has been electric construction for a large security data center. The crew has dealt with many challenges related to security, with checks in and out of the base, as well as the occasional security lockdown that can affect schedules.
After the recent recession, construction is finally in recovery mode. In recent years, Keeney says his greatest challenge was finding and keeping a qualified workforce. The situation has improved with help from trade organizations and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). PEC participates in a strong and growing apprenticeship program that helps new electricians come up in the industry while connecting with successful businesses.
With a strong team and constantly evolving capabilities, PEC continues to make headway in the market. The team’s solar division is growing steadily alongside other green energy initiatives. “We have a really great team here,” Keeney says. “I can’t say enough about them. When we see new technology we get our people trained on it in short order so we can stay competitive across the board.”
Of course, the numbers are important, but Keeney gauges his team’s performance on more important factors. “We are all about quality,” he explains. “As far as satisfaction from owners and end users, quality is all we have to sell. We have a lot of repeat business. Of course, I do not want to downplay safety. We want our team members home safe to their families every night and NECA helps us do that.”
In the coming years, Keeney is looking ahead to continued growth. His team has several major contracts coming down the pipeline and the backlog is starting to pile up. While cautiously optimistic, the team is chasing new opportunities as they come. No matter where the industry takes the business, Pyramid Electrical Contractors Inc. will continue to stand apart in the business with high quality and safe work with integrity.
