Parkway Construction & Associates
John Elmer founded Parkway Construction & Associates (Parkway) in 1981 as a Texas-based general contracting firm. For more than 30 years, the business has grown, extending a diverse set of services to clients throughout the United States. With a focus on commercial construction projects, Parkway serves a broad range of customer interests. While many aspects of the business have evolved over the years, the company’s philosophy remains greatly unchanged: Deliver excellent projects and develop excellent people.
Parkway is now led by Rick Wojciechowski, president and CEO, as well as Vaughan Hancock, COO. John Elmer, chairman, as well as two brothers, remain involved with the business as members of the board of directors.
Concept to completion
The company employs 160 people, all of whom are headquartered in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The team operates with an integrated services approach. “We have architects in-house so we can work with customers from concept to completion,” Wojciechowski says. “We establish ourselves as a partner instead of a vendor. We work nationwide with companies, often along a repeat model. We have multiple ongoing projects in different sectors.”
The company’s portfolio includes restaurants, movie theaters, health care, churches and retail locations, among others. The team works with several major repeat clients, including corporations, such as Chuy’s, P.F. Chang’s, AMC Theaters and At Home-The Home Décor Superstore, among many others.
The Parkway team’s recent work includes Vaquero Country Club in Westlake, Texas. Parkway was chosen to work with a team to assist with the completion of the design and construction of multiple projects for the development. The crew constructed a new guard house, comfort stations, maintenance facility, tennis center, golf teaching center, ranch house and a 30,000-square-foot clubhouse.
Another of Parkway’s largest customers is Chuy’s, a Tex Mex restaurant chain based in Austin, Texas. Parkway’s design-build efforts have been a key element in a partnership that has helped transform Chuy’s from a small Texas company into a significant nationwide player. Chuy’s now has restaurants in 14 states, and Parkway has designed and built every new restaurant since 2007, totaling more than 40 new locations.
The Parkway team provides preconstruction services, site investigation, scheduling, estimating, architectural and engineering services for Chuy’s. “Our construction management services are woven in this process for a seamless transition to the construction phase,” Hancock elaborates. “Using our 3-D modeling, our architects help the Chuy’s team see what each new restaurant will look like and accurately estimate the cost.”
While many construction firms were set back by challenges throughout the recession, Parkway has remained strong. The team continues to see significant growth through maintaining strong relationships with clients and partners. “We subcontract everything and serve only as the architect and construction management on each project,” Hancock says. “It is imperative that we keep good relationships with our subcontractors. We rely on them to maintain the same dedication to quality and efficiency that we want to bring to every job.”
The company’s diverse capabilities have encouraged growth over the years, and the results speak for themselves, with 125 percent growth in revenue over the past five years. Recent projects have attracted attention that has helped the team to expand its client base. Parkway is ranked among the top 400 contractors in the country and has been featured in several business and construction magazines, recently in Boardroom Magazine, Engineer News Record and the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing companies in America.
Clients have come to expect high standards of quality from the company. Wojciechowski and his team embrace strong values, foremost of which are integrity, trust and respect. With a strong focus on the customer, these values have helped Parkway establish a reputation for customer satisfaction and service. From concept to completion, the team strives for excellence – not just in final product but also in client experience. Lasting partnerships are the backbone of the business, turning over repeat business as well as referral work.
In the coming years, Hancock foresees an improvement in the marketplace. “We have seen slow but steady growth,” he explains. “In the coming years, we plan to continue driving our design build business forward. We have the same concerns as other contractors about the economy, regulations and expenses. We are fortunate to have a strong team that is dedicated to the excellence of our business.” Parkway Construction and Associates is reaching out to new clients with a strong set of capabilities and more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry.
