Putting the Client's Needs First

Thomas Mousel and Thom Vehon launched MTV General Contractors Inc. (MTVGC) on August 1, 1981, the same day that a small New York-based cable station started broadcasting. Fast-forward 31 years and more than a few misdirected phone calls and that little music television channel has changed direction several times, but the MTVGC team remains as committed as ever to providing quality results at a competitive cost.

MTVGC is dedicated to building long-term mutually beneficial relationships with clients by pledging never to grow so fast that projects wouldn’t be able to have the personal involvement of at least one MTVGC principal. In fact, the company’s name (which has nothing to do with music, unless you mean the sweet sounds of success) is an acronym formed with the letters of its original principals’ names, though the company added a third principal in 1996 to help shore up the company’s estimating and preconstruction experience. “I guess now that Robert Beck has joined we should technically be MTVB General Contractors now,” jokes Vehon, cofounder and still president of MTVGC.

Then again, the association with the MTV cable station has generated some positive publicity for the company over time, even at the cost of more than a few misdirected song request calls. “It has been really fun over the years,” admits Vehon. “It’s especially fun when we work with local churches and organizations, like the Boys and Girls Club of America, that are geared toward youth; the kids like it because they can tell their friends that MTV is involved.”

Project owners, however, associate the initials with a commercial construction company that strives to bring a sound and moral philosophy to the industry, building trust and long-term relationships through transparency, personal and professional integrity, open ears and clear communication. MTVGC maintains headquarters and a staff of roughly 14 professionals in Mesa, Ariz. The MTVGC team operates throughout Arizona and has ventured as far up the West Coast as the state of Washington. No matter where the company is active it continually provides customers with end-to-end project management and general contracting services, including design-build/engineering capabilities and a variety of preconstruction services to ensure projects live up to the company’s motto and deliver value for the client and quality results “right from the start.”

A prime contractor, MTVGC works with a roster of trusted, prequalified strategic partners, managing teams drawn from a database of 1,500 active subcontractors. The company also maintains a few tradesmen on staff to pitch in and help ensure projects stay on track if a little extra manpower is needed. The MTVGC team represents a group of professionals from diverse backgrounds within the construction industry, which gives the team an extra perspective for highly specialized projects. For example, Vehon started out as an electrical contractor prior to forming MTVGC, and the company still maintains licensing to perform electrical work, drywall installation, civil engineering and framing work as needed.

Shifting Gears Seamlessly

On a more day-to-day basis, MTVGC focuses its efforts on managing commercial projects, primarily as construction manager at-risk delivering projects on time and on or under budget. The company’s commitment to transparency and upholding a personal and professional level of integrity helped the company establish a strong foothold in the public sector and in the large-scale (1,500 – 2,000 person) houses of worship market sector, which up until roughly 2009 accounted for some over half of MTVGC’s total volume, according to Vehon. From establishing new campuses (like the 25-acre Central Christian Church of Arizona’s Gilbert Campus) to constructing state-of-the-art worship facilities, youth centers, skate parks and more, MTVGC takes pride in the work it does within the faith community.

MTVGC managed to weather the economic downturn with the help of its loyal clientele, who provided the company with a healthy backlog of work, while also expanding the company’s focus to the healthcare and transitional rehabilitation facilities.

“It was a time when we had to continually prove to our clients that we were the right choice and, of course, we did, but it required us to also scale back some on personnel,” adds Vehon.

Nevertheless, MTVGC took the opportunity to double down and prove that its consolidated team could still deliver the same quality of construction and responsive service that set MTVGC in a class of its own. The company completed four projects with Santé Partners that bring a new generation of transitional rehabilitation care to Arizona. The facilities resemble something more in line with an extended stay hotel than a traditional rehabilitation facility, with amenities like private suites, spas, a salon and a café.

Breaking New Ground

“This is a facility that’s really new to the market and it was really exciting for us to be a part of something so new and to see the market really embrace the new concept,” expresses Vehon. In the case of the Santé of North Scottsdale facility, MTVGC was challenged to deliver a luxury rehabilitation facility and ensure work was as minimally disruptive to the community as possible. The 72-unit development was located at the foothills of North Scottsdale’s D.C. Ranch, a luxury residential development complete with its own country club, shopping center and veterinary hospital.

The site also required MTVGC to ensure that any indigenous vegetation on site would be transplanted if removed, as per the City of Scottsdale’s requirements, and that the site’s landscaping be restored to its original state after construction. And MTVGC delivered the North Scottsdale project along with Santé Partners facilities in Surprise, Mesa and Chandler, Ariz., within just two years.

Coming up, MTVGC will complete work on a 250-unit multifamily residential development also located in Scottsdale. “It’s a very urban development geared toward the young professionals who want to live close to where they work,” adds Vehon.

In the next few years, the company is on track to continue building momentum as the markets continue to stabilize, and part of this is because of the dedication of the company’s staff (many of which have been with the company over a decade or more). Even though Vehon has contemplated retirement, it’s not likely he’ll ever choose to completely divorce himself from the business. “I love construction and I would love to always be able to manage at least one project by myself,” admits Vehon.
