McCann Fabrication

Metal fabrication in Maine for more than three decades

In 1983, Richard McCann, along with his brother, founded McCann Fabrication in New Gloucester, Maine. For more than 30 years, the company has provided full-service metal fabrication services with a comprehensive range of exceptionally crafted metal products.

With 50 years of experience in the fabrication industry, McCann began his professional career working as a carpenter with his father. At the time, carpenters lacked the necessities needed to work through harsh Maine winters, therefore McCann chose to look for full-time work. “I went to work for a sheet metal contracting company called Hamilton & Son,” says McCann. “I ended up working there for 17 years until the business was sold.”

Hamilton & Son closed shortly after the sale of the company. “It was a very reputable company so my brother and I picked up the pieces and started our own business,” says McCann.

Fully equipped

McCann Fabrication provides numerous fabrication services to the industrial sector all over the United States with a worldwide market on select products. Over the past 30 years the company has earned a first-class reputation in welding, custom metal fabrication and related services. “We do a lot of wastewater treatment and microbrewery equipment,” explains McCann. “We also work with engineering houses that serve paper mills all over the world so build a lot of related equipment for them.”

With a 26,400-square-foot manufacturing facility McCann Fabrication is devoted to custom fabrication. The company consistently enhances its capabilities with cutting-edge computer-integrated technology. While the majority of designs are pre-engineered before reaching the facility, McCann Fabrication does have the capability to custom design a product when needed. “We are very well equipped,” says McCann.

With cutting-edge technology comes state-of-art equipment. “We have a tremendous amount of equipment here,” says McCann. “We have two, five-axis water jet cutting machines as well as a CNC plasma cutter, and two press breaks.”

McCann Fabrication is a member of the Manufacturers Association of Maine (MAME), which is a 501(c) 6 nonprofit organization comprised of over 300 companies and 100 students in Maine. McCann is a former president of the association and currently is on the board of directors. “It’s been a great networking tool,” says McCann. “It’s a way to stay in tune with the industry throughout the state, and all members of the association work really well together.”

Enduring relationships

While McCann Fabrication maintains strong relationships with its clients all over the world, the company also has a strong network of subcontractors that it often works with. “We compliment other machine shops locally,” says McCann. “We don’t really view other machine shops as competitors. We all help each other out.” The company also works with Mark Pollard Electric to provide electrical components to wastewater treatment equipment.”

In more than 30 years in business, McCann Fabrication has been fortunate to remain busy. By constantly upgrading equipment and services the company stays ahead of the game.

“In the 30 years of this company I think we may have had one or two bad years,” shares McCann. “Every year has been at least somewhat positive. The biggest challenge in this industry is finding the right people. We’re always keeping an eye out for qualified workers.”

McCann Fabrication is proud to maintain a loyal customer base that continues to do business with the company year after year. McCann credits the success of his company to the hard work and dedication of his employees. “We really have a great group of people here,” says McCann. “The employee turnover ratio here is very low. People come to work and they stay here. They are all solid craftsmen and we have really good certified welders. The quality of work that they produce is outstanding.”

While the company’s experience and service to hundreds of satisfied customers spans more than 30 years, McCann Fabrication refuses to rest on the laurels of past accomplishments. In the last few years, the company decided to take advantage of low interest rates and expand its facility. “We took a chance and told ourselves that we were going to make the building bigger and we’re going to make the company bigger,” says McCann. “When you’re in business you have to grow.”

Outside of building the business, McCann enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, playing golf and enjoying the Maine outdoors by hunting and fishing.

As McCann Fabrication continues to flourish, the company will provide the high-quality metal fabrication products that its clients have grown to expect and trust.
