Since it was founded in 2003, March Associates Construction Inc. (MAC) has been one of the fastest-growing construction management and general contracting firms in the Northeast. With a hands-on approach to construction management, March himself remains involved in every project, giving personal attention to each client. “We’re small enough where we can give our customers individual attention, yet big enough to handle projects of any size,” says Murray. “The systems, procedures and protocols that we have in place lend themselves to our clients in a positive way. On the horizon for MAC is the construction of a Landmarks building in Manhattan. The facility will have two stories below grade and seven stories above and contain post-tension concrete. The entire façade of the building will be clad in curtain wall systems with terra cotta rain screens. The team has also launched the construction of a 16-story, post-tension concrete dual-brand hotel, as well as a challenging waterfront multifamily project — apartments being built on a pier.

Getting started

When Lou March founded MAC, he brought with him more than ten years’ experience as a construction industry leader. As president of the company March rolls up his sleeves and personally oversees every aspect of the business from initial client contact through to project completion. His attention to detail and determination to deliver excellent customer service are the driving forces behind his management style and work ethic. March’s approach to customer satisfaction is a valued principle gleaned from years of working with his father, Louis March Sr. As such, all project managers engage in a rigorous training and development program supervised by March so that they are well versed in economic planning and the importance of adherence to schedules.

Prior to starting his company, March spent several years at March Associates Inc., working his way up through the corporate ranks and learning the construction management business from all angles. He began as a project superintendent coordinating the daily execution of various construction tasks onsite. He then moved on to project manager where his supervisory role expanded and he increased his client contact, and later was named vice president. Under the tutelage of his father, March absorbed not only the essential aspects of managing the day-to-day business, but also inherited a strong sense of the principled way to run a successful business. That legacy has helped MAC grow into a multi-million dollar contender today.

While at March Associates, March managed and completed a variety of high-profile projects including several Home Depots, Lowes Home Improvement Stores, PHP Healthcare Facilities, Bob’s Stores, Super A & P Shopping Mall, Oak Park Commons, Clifton Commons, Edison Crossroads, Hillsborough Promenade, and 79 Hudson Street, a seven-story office building in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Prior to his experience at March Associates, March was an assistant superintendent for a large New York City construction firm and worked on such projects as Trump Plaza – New York, Madison Square Garden – Felt Forum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.

While MAC plans to continue its expansion throughout the market, the company will maintain strategic and manageable growth. “Everything we do is planned,” says Murray. “Our growth will be mindfully controlled.
