Since 1946, the Madsen family has been serving the greater Philadelphia area under three principles: honesty, quality and service. As founder of Madsen Inc. (Madsen), a Pennsylvania-based mechanical contractor, the late Dave Madsen Sr.’s promise to customers surrounds the three cornerstones.

“I will do no work that will not enhance my reputation for honesty, quality and service,” he would say, according to Andrew Madsen, Dave’s son and now company president.

Setting the bar high

Andrew, along with his late brother Stan, grew the company to what it is today. The family-owned and -operated company is still running strong on second and third generation family ownership.

The signature Madsen pink and blue service trucks are a familiar sight throughout the Delaware Valley, part of a growing fleet of more than 50 trucks carrying trained and certified professionals.

“I think what sets us apart is our team,” shares Andrew, who’s been with Madsen for more than 40 years. “We have about 65 employees and everyone cares to make the customer happy; that a job is done the right way with good quality materials and workmanship.”

A perfect fit

Today, Madsen is still known for expert commercial and residential HVAC and plumbing service, but the company has also grown into a significant kitchen and bath retailer. “When my father started the business almost 70 years ago, Madsen was strictly plumbing and HVAC,” says Andrew. “Within the second year, Madsen started our kitchen and bath division business.”

With the ability to offer complete bathroom and kitchen products, backed by concept through completion service, including permits for building and MEP construction, the retail side was a great fit for Madsen to expand its business.

In Broomall, Pennsylvania, Madsen boasts a 3,000-square-foot show room, featuring 17 kitchen and bathroom displays. The company offers a full range of cabinetry, along with granite, solid surface and quartz countertops on display with all coordinating backup samples. Taking a walk through full room settings allows customers to experience a wide range of features, from countertops to faucets, sinks to toilets and everything in between.

From small guest bathrooms to oversized masters, Madsen specializes in beautiful bathroom design and installation. “We handle the entire project from concept through completion,” adds Andrew.

While the retail side remains grounded in residential applications, Madsen’s scope of full HVAC and plumbing service spans a number of commercial industries. “We do a great deal of tenant fit-outs; everything from country clubs to high-end office buildings,” notes Andrew.

Furthermore, Madsen designs, fabricates and installs all ductwork made in its updated fabrication shop.

Referral-based business

After many decades in the industry, Madsen has built a reputation to rely on. “More than 80 percent of our work is now on a referral basis,” reveals Andrew. Referrals have certainly been on Madsen’s side through the recession, but the company still had to buckle down to push through lean times.

“We’ve been through recessions in the past; in 1985 interest rates grew 15 to 17 percent, so we were somewhat prepared for this last one,” he continues.
