Providing Diverse Insulation Solutions to Contractors across the Country

Joe Novogratz founded IDI Distributors (IDI) as a small insulation distribution business in 1979. Starting with a single location, the family-owned and -operated business has grown exponentially over the years. Today, IDI operates through a nationwide network with 31 offices across the country. Chris Novogratz, Joe’s son and vice president of IDI, joined the business in 1995, eventually working his way up to his current position.

Joe and Chris work with a strong managerial team, leading more than 150 employees amongst locations. The offices span from San Francisco to Boston, serving all points in between. IDI caters to a broad market of insulation contractors with products to suit the needs of commercial, industrial and residential projects.

In the company’s early years, the team specialized in fiberglass and cellulose insulation products. With the growth of the company’s commercial segment, as well as new innovations in the insulation industry, IDI now offers spray-foam and heavy commercial insulation products.

Carving Out a Niche

The residential market remains the company’s largest customer base, although the commercial division is catching up. IDI deals directly with clients, offering a high level of attention and service to each, regardless of size or market.

“We operate under a simple motto: We work for you,” Chris explains. “With all of the ways this business has changed since my father founded it, one thing that remains constant is our personal commitment to our contractors. Our goal is to help their businesses succeed. We offer the service, support, products, product training and marketing support to make them more profitable and successful.”

The team’s goal is to offer more than just a source for products. The company’s line includes major brands, such as Owens Corning, CertainTEED and Bayer. IDI’s strong product selection attracts customers, but the level of service is what keeps them coming back.

Many of IDI’s clients perform major specialty work. When it comes to specific brands and products, Joe, Chris and colleagues offer leading training, assistance and information to help customers utilize these products to maximize efficiency and durability.

Managing Market Changes

Regardless of the recent economic downturn and housing market crash, IDI has remained stable. The company’s diversity in product lines and customer base has kept the business afloat.

“Overall, we have seen business increase in all the markets we service,” Chris explains. “New construction demand drove most of this increase along with existing homeowners re-insulating their homes for a 30 percent return savings on their energy bills. We plan on seeing re-insulation demand continue to increase especially through the winter season.”

Chris and his team understand that contractors have options when it comes to purchasing materials, which makes the service end of the business even more important. “I think we understand the challenges our contractors face on a daily basis, because we’ve been there too,” he notes. “No other insulation distributor will spend more one-on-one time with a contractor to help them grow their business. We are the one-stop shop for insulation products, technical expertise, professional training and business support.”

Still Growing

With growth speeding up, IDI is looking to expand. In order to provide additional resources, the crew has rolled out the IDI Alliance Loyalty Contractor Program. The program offers benefits to contractors who are committed to doing business with IDI for the long haul. These bonuses include: materials management software, discounts on materials and outside services, such as truck rentals, as well as improved access to specialized training materials and technical information.

IDI recently opened its newest offices in San Francisco and Seattle, but Chris and his team are hoping to open up a few more in the next year. “We would also like to add more benefits to our IDI Alliance Program to offer even more value to our contractors,” Chris continues. “With a personal commitment from our contractors, we offer a vast array of business services from a number of different vendors at negotiated rates. We are committed to being an ally for our contractors.”

The team remains dedicated to relationships with contractors, although the extent of making connections does not end there. The management team places high value on team members, crediting the crew with driving the company forward as IDI expands.

Joe and Chris continue to run a true family business, extending the definition of family to include employees. No matter how large the company grows, company culture is a constant. The Novogratz family is proud to be able to offer rewarding careers to a growing team.
