Humphries and Company (HAC) was founded in 1981 as a small and dedicated interiors contractor. Over the years, the business has grown through building relationships based on trust and integrity. Working closely with a network of strategic partners, the business has turned over thousands of unique spaces to commercial clients. HAC continues to grow its business through its reputation in the market for quality work and responsive service.
Scott Moore, managing partner at HAC, plays a leadership role in the team of 90 professionals. Headquartered in Atlanta, the company serves clients within driving distance of the city. The company’s portfolio includes high-end office interiors, data-centers, retail spaces and building repositioning projects.
Over the last few years, the company has established a stronger focus on diversification. “We are entering new markets and taking on more faith based, retail and showroom work,” Moore explains. “During the downturn, many building owners postponed engaging in large-scale improvements. With the improved economy, building owners now are looking to us to help them improve their valuable assets. Toward that end, we are doing a lot of common area work for offices, and we have started doing more landscaping and hardscaping work on the exterior of buildings.”
Staying busy
HAC has seen a steady stream of work in recent years. A creative business plan has helped the company break into new markets and attract new clients. Recently, the team was awarded a project for the Intercontinental Exchange in Atlanta. The project is a multimillion dollar endeavor that will span two years.
“We are working on the first phase now,” says Moore. “This component includes eight floors and the second phase of the project will be an additional six floors, which will start next year. We are adding exterior stairs to all 14 floors. There is also going to be a fully remodeled café and conference center, new fencing and a guard shack. We are reworking all the entrance points to the property. One of the more unique portions is an existing loading dock that we are renovating to create a terrace for gatherings.”
Another recent project is the Ponce City Market in the Midtown area of Atlanta. “Jamestown Properties has about 500,000 square feet of office space to lease,” Moore notes. “We have been awarded the first three major office components to be built in Ponce City Market. The project is being developed in the largest brick structure in the southeast United States. This will be a live-work-play environment coming together through the conversion of an old Sears-Roebuck building.”
The large brick building has been unoccupied for a long time. It is on the national registry of historic places. The revitalized structure will offer apartments and an open air market as well as office space. “This is not a typical office space,” Moore elaborates. “There are low ceilings, lots of columns and all wood floors throughout. This is a really neat project for us.”
Growth-oriented business
While business has been steady for HAC, Moore notes that his team is still very much in recovery mode. “The market is still competitive here,” he says. “2009 was our worst year, though each year since has been an improvement over the last. 2014 is poised to be a breakout year for us.”
The downturn forced HAC to tighten up finances and reduce staff. Now the business is in hiring mode. “We have emerged stronger from the recession,” says Moore. “We kept our core group of superintendents and project managers and our newer team members have been key to our growth. We have a strong and experienced team and we are looking to add a few more members in the coming year.”
The high-caliber staff has helped HAC keep the wheels turning. Now, things are speeding up. The company has a strong backlog of work and continues to seek out new opportunities.
For over 30 years, HAC has proven to be a strong and resilient business. Moore and his team are adaptable, making the best out of the recent lean market. Now that the business is on an upward trend, the company is looking ahead to new challenges. Humphries and Company LLC is poised to grow with the Atlanta market, offering consistent value and high quality work through a broad range of construction services.
