Creating Spaces

Humphries and Company LLC (Humphries) is an established Georgia-based general contractor that specializes in a wide range of interior construction projects. “Most of our work is in Atlanta and the surrounding metro areas,” explains Scott Moore, vice president and principal at Humphries. “However, we’ll take on anything within driving distance of the city.”

The company was founded in 1981, and Humphries has been responsible for some of the most creative interior spaces in the state. The project managers and superintendents on the Humphries team utilize leading technology to construct office spaces, data centers, restaurants, retail outlets, building repositioning and higher education facilities that are both functional and visually engaging.

The company celebrated 30 years in business in 2011. Throughout the last three decades Humphries has established close relationships with not only clients, but also with a network of reliable subcontractors and vendors that share Humphries’ dedication to a thorough construction management process, competitive pricing and quality work. Humphries’ customers have come to count on an organized administrative team and a group of experienced project managers, designers, superintendents and skilled carpenters. According to Moore, the company’s driving philosophy is to pull off extraordinary projects on challenging schedules with “no surprises” at completion.

Green Endeavors

Humphries has worked with major companies, such as SunTrust, CNN, CBS, Google, Coca-Cola Refreshments, Aetna and even The Lego Group. Other clients include many regional developers, property owners and managers, colleges and universities, as Humphries and Company LLCwell as medical facilities. No matter the project, each space is unique and carefully constructed to suit the needs of individual clients by maximizing space utilization, technological capabilities and aesthetics. In addition, Humphries has completed over a dozen LEED-certified projects, ranging from Silver to Platinum standards. These projects take advantage of regional materials, sustainable waste management and energy-efficient technology from lighting systems to windows.

The Arthur Blank Family Foundation office was Humphries’ first LEED-certified project and also the first LEED Gold-certified project for the state of Georgia. The building features post-consumer recycled materials, including concrete. Even the lighting systems exceed green standards, from high-efficiency electrical work and bulbs to exterior lighting designed to reduce light pollution. Humphries’ involvement in the design process helped to ensure sustainability and low energy costs for the future of the building’s existence. Efficiency increases property values and reduces the amount of the nonprofit’s budget spent on keeping the lights on, rechanneling financial resources into the foundation’s many initiatives and grants.

Innovative Interiors

Moore says the bulk of his company’s business is in office interiors, ranging from high-end finishes to standard open office workspaces. A standout project for the team at Humphries is Google’s creative office space in Midtown Atlanta. The bright office is filled with unique geometric forms in custom ceiling panels, drywall and decorative glass paneling. Humphries completed the project in 2007, and Google continues to be a valued client today.

Humphries added another notable project in 2012 to its impressive resume: a $9.8 million, 100,000-square foot high-end office space for a major international law firm. Other notable projects from recent years include a 500,000-square foot data center, as well as a 400,000-square foot corporate headquarters, and the building repositioning of some of Atlanta’s most architecturally significant office buildings.

Humphries was also involved in the complete overhaul of the St. Joseph’s Hospital main visitor entry lobby and gift shop. The scope of the work at the hospital included the installation of new granite flooring and complete renovations of the restrooms and elevator lobby. Crews were challenged to work around the hospital’s daily operations, as the entry was functional throughout the project. Humphries succeeded without delays or significant inconvenience to hospital staffers, patients or visitors.

Every so often truly unusual projects come along. “A good example of the diversity of our skill set is the new LEGOLAND Discovery Center,” says Moore in reference to the amusement attraction built in an urban Atlanta mall. “There are only four or five in the country.”

The LEGOLAND Discovery Center features a sprawling replica of the city of Atlanta comprised entirely of the tiny, plastic, interlocking bricks. Other features include a 4-D cinema where guests can enjoy 3-D movies with an added environmental element: the experience is complete with wind, rain, lightning and even snow. There are rides, play centers, an academy for future LEGO Masters and an enormous gift shop, all finely finished by the professionals at Humphries.

The company has maintained growth throughout the past few years while others have taken big hits because of the recession. “Staying competitive has been tough,” says Moore. “Lots of other base building companies are trying to diversify and include more interiors.” This makes the bidding process highly competitive, but the team at Humphries has been aggressive. Moore says the scope of the company’s capabilities is expanding. “We’ve established a great name for offices and interiors,” he explains. “We enjoy that reputation and we try to take advantage of that. We’re continually trying to get the word out about our long resume of nonprofit and healthcare projects.”

“We believe the key to our success is our team,” says Moore. “Our people are our greatest asset and over 50 percent of our employees have been with Humphries for over 10 years.” The quality of the Humphries team has helped in the development of lasting client and vendor relationships over the past 31 years. Humphries has established a reputation of integrity and quality interior construction with every project, large or small, national or local. “We hope to continue this tradition for the next three decades, and beyond,” says Moore proudly. The team at Humphries and Company LLC agrees and will strive to accomplish such a feat.
