Bob McCrossan, president and CEO of Hi Tech, founded the company in 1986. “We started out primarily as an access and modular flooring contractor and distributor, so we worked mostly as subcontractors to general contractors and construction managers,” he explains. “Our specialty is providing sustainable building components for Class A office space, general office buildings and data centers.”

Today Hi Tech specializes in providing modular and sustainable flooring to clients throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont. Now more than ever, modular and sustainable construction components used in high-performance office buildings reduce office costs and provide the client with flexibility to adapt a space to ever-changing building requirements.

As of March 2016, Hi Tech has been awarded numerous jobs that involve facilities for major companies, including Goldman Sachs, Comcast, Boston Consulting and Coach headquarters in New York City. “We’re also doing multiple projects for Google,” says McCrossan.

With the advancement of innovative technologies implemented in the construction industry, Hi Tech has recently worked with a supplier to develop a wireless technology, which is integrated into its access floor systems. The technology is being implemented into several million square feet of the world headquarters of one of the largest technology companies in the world.

“Haworth Access Flooring, the manufacturer that we work with who developed the system, has helped us to land several other projects with this technology,” shares McCrossan. “Haworth is a great company that stays ahead of the game by producing intricate access flooring for the headquarters of major companies.”

Embracing fresh ideas

Hi Tech also chooses to stay ahead of the game and gain an edge in all facets of the industry, which includes embracing new and fresh ideas. An example of this is the team’s efforts to welcome the next generation of young people into the workforce. With baby boomers bracing for retirement and the millennial generation infiltrating the market, Hi Tech embraces the fresh outlook on the future of technology and industry.

In an effort to gain insight into the minds of millennials, McCrossan has attended several seminars focused on hiring, integrating and retaining employees from the new generation. “They are definitely different,” says McCrossan. “I know this to be true as a baby boomer myself who has raised three millennials. They are looking for an employer who is willing to adapt to their need for a balanced life between work and personal time. They also want to be confident that the company they choose to work for is up-to-date and able to adapt to the latest technology available on the market. We need to embrace their creative ideas and respect the fact that the need for family and personal time is very important.”

As the leader of a company that has been at the forefront of the industry for 30 years, McCrossan has gained an accurate insight into the measurement of success. He places emphasis on three major points: the financial success from maintaining a healthy balance sheet and position in the market; quality of workforce; and serving the marketplace by exceeding customers’ expectations. “You need to manage your people successfully and understand that they need to gain some satisfaction from their job,” he says. “For a company to be and stay successful, its people have to be dedicated and happy with their day-to-day routine.”
