With strong leadership and a solid track record, Helix Electric has become the largest non-union electrical contractor in Las Vegas. Challenging opportunities, potential for growth and job security have enabled Helix Electric to recruit some of the best talent in the industry. While performing a majority of its work in Las Vegas, the company often ventures to other parts of the country to work with its strategic partners.

Helix Electric began as a spinoff company after founder Victor Fuchs relocated from the Helix Electric Inc. corporate office in California to establish a Nevada branch in 1995. Fuchs began with the company in 1987 as an assistant estimator. After working up the ranks of the company, Fuchs established and managed a design-build division for Helix Electric Inc. and eventually became vice president of the company. Fuchs operated the Nevada division of the company until 2001, when he seized an opportunity and purchased the majority interests in the branch and Helix Electric became its own entity.

Helix ElectricSince 2001, Helix Electric has operated with three divisions: a major project division, a special projects division and a 24/7 service department. The major project division deals with large institutional jobs such as schools, hospitals and military work. This division also handles renewable energy projects that involve solar power plants. The special project division deals with the company’s private, high-density work, which includes hotels and design-build work. With its 24/7 service department, Helix Electric maintains a fleet of 40 trucks that are available to resolve any issues that might arise for its customers.

An independent venture

As Fuchs launched his new independent company, Helix Electric worked in commercial and residential markets and became a household name in Las Vegas. Completing 2,500 units per year on average, the company was involved in the construction of nearly every high-rise and mid-rise residential building in the city.

Building an enduring reputation and establishing solid relationships along the way, the Helix Electric team was poised and confident when the recession hit in 2008. “Our diversity and ability to cover a wide range of markets really helped us to not take a significant hit during that time,” says Fuchs. “We also traveled some during that period. We went to Arizona, Mexico, Texas and did some work in North Dakota for about three years.”

Fuchs also says that the company’s client base was instrumental in the its continued success through the economic downturn. “We are very lucky to have had the clients that we’ve worked with over the years,” he says. “They believed in us and wanted to ensure that we would survive the recession with them. It’s really all about relationships in this business.”

Helix ElectricHelix Electric is currently involved in the construction of a new IKEA store in southwest Las Vegas. The Sweden-based retailer is opening its 41st U.S. location on a 26-acre lot. At 351,000 square feet, the structure will be the largest retail outlet in the state of Nevada. Fuchs says that an interesting aspect of the project is that there is a major solar component involved, as the entire roof will be lined with solar panels. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2016.

A talented team

Through the process of forming his own independent company, Fuchs credits the success of Helix Electric to the commitment, dedication and skill of his employees. The company has managed to maintain a high employee-retention rate, as many of its associates have been with the company since the day it started. “The people we have working here motivate me every day in what I do,” he says. “Some employees have mentioned to me that Helix Electric has been the reason they were able to raise their families and put their kids through college. That means so much to me because I consider everyone who works here a part of my family.”

While it remains the largest non-union electrical contractor in Las Vegas, Helix Electric will continue to grow and increase its revenue by 30 percent over the coming years. The company’s strategic plan of expansion involves possibly opening new offices in the neighboring states as well as looking at new markets. With the current medical cannabis boom in Nevada, facilities are now being built with complicated lighting systems. Helix Electric has jumped on this opportunity and now controls approximately 80 percent of the market with projections of it growing steadily.

As the company expands its market share and geographic footprint, Helix Electric will continue to build upon its established relationships and create new ones, all while prioritizing integrity and quality.
