The Hatch & Bailey Company Inc. (H&B) is one of the oldest suppliers of residential construction materials in southwestern Connecticut. Two separate families, the Hatches and the Baileys, founded a single establishment in 1872 to supply the local community with lumber, millwork and other building materials. H&B is the product of two family companies combined to offer better services and a wider variety of products to mutual customers.

Throughout the 140 years since its conception, H&B has been a critical supplier in the region. The company has continually adapted its products and services to the ever-changing needs of the local customer base. “Our niche has become supplying lumber and materials to the professional contractor for primarily residential construction,” says Bryan Mellick, current president and CEO of H&B.

H&B operates out of two Connecticut-based locations, one in South Norwalk and the other in Stamford. The company employs over 30 people between the two sites, including dedicated customer service associates, delivery drivers and millwork specialists. Sales, service, millwork and delivery services are all performed in house. H&B does not perform installations, although the company has built lasting relationships with local contractors that are more than happy to put together a new kitchen, bathroom, office or industrial facility for customers.

A Catalog of Diversity

The company offers a full line of high-quality products for clients, which include professional builders, contractors and do-it-yourselfers. H&B has a large, well-stocked lumberyard offering a variety of standard sizes and wood types. The selection includes fine hard and soft wood products, and the sales team can order specialty items through a network of reliable vendors.

H&B supplies both stock and custom windows and doors from brands like Marvin, Weathershield and Hurd. The company offers a variety of options for all different budgets, as well. Whether a client is looking for interior doors, materials for a full entryway, or just a few replacement windows, the sales team is well-versed in all of the products and ready to help select a product that fits form and function.

Mason contractors can find a large selection of concrete block and other products manufactured by H&B. A variety of decking and railing solutions are also available in many different materials. Cedar, mahogany, pressure-treated lumber, composites and PVC are available in several styles for clients’ perusal.

One of the most popular items H&B offers is custom millwork from several reliable suppliers across the country. The millwork specialists at H&B work with clients to design unique, lasting products for homes and businesses.

Keeping the Numbers Up

Most of the United States has faced a harsh slowdown in the construction industry and Connecticut is no exception. Regardless, H&B continues to grow and diversify, leaning on strong relationships the team has built with local contractors and suppliers worldwide. “We’ve definitely faced some challenges,” says Mellick. “We’ve had some market fallout. Some of our customers just could not get capital or credit.”

To close the gap, H&B has worked hard to attract more customers. Specifically, Mellick says, “Quality builders who were willing to stick it out for the long run.” Relationships with strategic partners have been equally important. “We’ve been working closely with our vendors, especially when it comes to product training,” he explains. “We’ve been keeping updated on the latest technology and products, which helped us stay ahead.”

H&B has contributed to several major client projects lately, as well. No matter the size, according to Mellick, the team’s focus is on working closely with customers to make every project a success. The company’s contractor customers have been busy with several local projects, including a condominium complex, a sidewalk for the Norwalk municipality and an educational farm at a local school. The team also has several projects in the pipeline, including a second phase of the condominium project.

Mellick has been with H&B for five years and has seen business cycles fluctuate first-hand. Like his customers, Mellick says he is in it for the long haul. He is preparing his team with initiatives to boost growth and better serve clients. By offering the latest products and technologies H&B can operate more efficiently and contribute to long-lasting relationships with clients. “We’re using technology to our advantage,” says Mellick.

For his team, technology is only one facet of customer service. “We take personal attention to detail,” says Mellick. “We find the answers to our customers’ questions if we don’t know them, and we’re willing to fix any problems that arise with our products. We’re competitively priced, but we focus on quality.”

Needless to say, The Hatch & Bailey Company Inc.’s loyal customers have come to count on quality in products, as well as professional, friendly service.
