Founded in 1990, Golden Construction Development Company Inc. (Golden Construction) has spanned two generations as a commercial general contractor in southern California. Golden Construction’s motto focuses on building medical clinics, stating: We Build Life.

“Our clients give life to our patients and we feel by our construction we are building life for these patients,” states Joe Coleman, president and founder of Golden Construction, who started the company after years in the industry. Growing up, Joe helped his father service construction equipment; he moved to working in the field during high school. In 1990, he was looking for a change. With his wife’s encouragement, and two young boys at home, Joe started his own company.

Headquartered in Huntington Beach, California, Golden Construction started out with a focus on residential construction, but quickly found a niche in medical construction. Joe developed Golden Construction’s mission: being the premier client-focused medical construction contractor in the southern California area. Joe found targeting the dialysis industry was rewarding, and he was able to use his years of construction experience to specialize in the field.

Golden opportunity

Jason Coleman, Joe’s son and vice president, joined the Golden Construction team as a laborer shortly after high school. Growing up watching his father build a company from scratch gave Jason the drive to help the company continue expanding.

“His hard work ethic built the company,” says Jason of his father. After working his way through the ranks, Jason landed his current position, bringing his own vision to grow the company and take it to an entirely new level.

Growing exponentially since Jason joined the team, Golden Construction has expanded to work on any commercial development or restoration project, although it still retains its focus in the medical market. The company will work with any project, from design-build to negotiated bids, with both Jason and Joe acting as project managers. “We try to do good, hard, honest work,” Jason says proudly.

While the medical focus sets the company apart in the construction industry, Golden Construction’s ability to work quickly and effectively on remodeling projects helps keep an edge in the field.

“If you have an existing office or outpatient surgery center that needs to be updated, we can go in and refurbish those in off-hours,” explains Jason. “The way we’ve put a team together, to get in and get out in limited hours without shutting down these facilities, is really a niche of ours.”

Value in integrity

Searching out different ways to do business and train its employees has helped Golden Construction gain momentum in the market. With a strong emphasis on customer service and accountability, the company seeks to garner trust with its clients and encourages an environment within its own team that echoes such.

“We preach to our team members that we are an extension of the team that we’re building for,” Jason continues. “We try to produce a team atmosphere that I hope is recognized and sets us apart.”

Employing fewer than 10 workers, the projects are split between Jason and Joe as project managers, with Jason taking on most of the new construction and Joe working with the remodeling projects. The company hopes to take on a new project manager in the near future, allowing for more versatility in accepting clients and easing the workload.

While most of its remodeling projects are almost entirely self-performed, Golden Construction utilizes subcontractors mostly for new construction. The company has its own in-house plumbing team, and regularly has its employees trained and certified to be able to complete additional sectors of projects that come up on the job.

Expanding outward

In 2013, Golden Construction received licenses to work in the southern Nevada region, expanding out of its usual market. Working in the Las Vegas area has allowed the company a new client base and has the added benefit of being close to family members who are contractors in the area. “It’s easy for us to move over to that market and have other people to rely on,” Jason explains.

Starting new projects across California, Golden Construction takes pride in having customers return for repeat business. A dedicated customer base and a tight niche allowed the company to move through the recession with a steady workflow.

“My goal was to look back and ask, “What recession?” Jason details. “We grew through it. Our clientele helped push us through.”

Looking ahead, Jason expects Golden Construction will continue to grow and expand at a steady rate. The company’s dedication to its field and client base has allowed it to find a comfortable niche in an always-present industry.
