Emerald Green Building Services
Most Americans spend the majority of their day working indoors and the health and safety of this environment has been shown to directly impact everything from employee satisfaction and productivity to overall health. In Billerica, Massachusetts, Emerald Green Building Services is the full-service solution for professional daily cleaning and building maintenance with a focus on creating the healthiest indoor environment possible.
All of the company’s 150 employees are guided by Diversey’s Healthy High Performance Cleaning (HHPC) training program and every account strives to meet Green-Guard certification. This means all certified products must meet stringent chemical emissions standards based on established criteria from public health agencies. This certification is widely recognized by sustainable building programs and codes worldwide, including LEED standards. The goal is to protect human health by reducing exposure to chemicals and other pollutants in the indoor environment.
Setting a higher standard
Serving the greater Lowell and Boston area, as well as parts of southern New Hampshire, this has been Emerald’s goal since inception in 2012. Paul McAleer, president of Emerald, formed the company after 25 years of related experience in the industry.
“We offer commercial contract daily cleaning for Class-A office space, higher education and health care facilities, retail, event forums and we even have a couple Department of Defense clean room accounts,” says Gary Perrin, regional operations manager of Emerald. “We also deliver some specialty services in flooring, carpet care and window care.”
McAleer formed Emerald with a few partners to set a new standard in Green-Guard-certified cleaning backed by industry leading HHPC practices and highly trained employees. “The concept we offer is to be a full-facility green partner with commercial building and property management services, but also green services in landscaping, HVAC , waste management and recycling,” explains Perrin. “Emerald is the culmination of full-facility care.”
Emerald offers a range of services including: comprehensive janitorial programs, porter and matron services, hard surface refinishing and restoration, clean room services, exterior window and interior glass cleaning, power washing, hardwood floor refinishing and maintenance, snow shoveling and removal and emergency response services.
All of Emerald’s sustainable cleaning services are backed by the Green-Guard promise. The Green-Guard Environmental Institute (GEI) was founded in 2001 to improve human health and quality of life by enhancing indoor air quality and reducing people’s exposure to chemicals and other pollutants. As an ISO-IEC Guide 65:1996 accredited, third-party organization, GEI certifies products and materials for low chemical emissions and provides a free resource for choosing healthier products and materials for indoor environments.
Through the use of HHPC products, Emerald’s customers can bring their locations up to Green-Guard’s standards. “Our goal is to get every account up to certification,” says Perrin.
This can be a challenge, considering the wide range of accounts Emerald services. “We have a couple of Department of Defense contracts and we’re the single-source provider for the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell and the Lowell Spinners’ event venues,” says Perrin. “We’re involved with the local sports teams at these facilities and in a way, we’ve become part of the family. We have season tickets and we frequently offer them to our employees and their families.”
Fostering a dedicated team
Perrin says not only does Emerald want to set the green-clean standard for a better working environment, the company wants the best team in the business. “First and foremost, our knowledge and commitment to the industry stands out at Emerald,” says Perrin. “Our training and mentoring programs really foster commitment among our staff. They’re the ones in the field, providing the service so they’re our most important asset. We do a great deal of mentoring our staff and we like to promote from within.”
After only three years in business, Perrin says the right people can make or break a startup company like Emerald. “We want the right people with the right fit,” he says. “We’re growing a company still in the startup stage so it’s important to heavily invest resources back into the company, our staff, with the community and with customers.”
Emerald has a collective bargaining agreement with The Teamsters Local 25 union to garner better benefits for its employees. “Once people have been with us for the long term, the union offers great benefits and vacation,” he adds. “Emerald also supports the annual Autism Foundation in partnership with The Teamsters Local 25.”
Emerald takes care of its employees and the community. Corporate responsibility and concern for the welfare of greater Lowell are central to Emerald’s mission. “We’re very involved with many organizations through corporate sponsorships,” says Perrin.
These programs include partnerships with Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union with the We Share a Common Thread Foundation scholarship program, as well as Catie’s Closets’ annual clothing drive providing clothing and other items to underprivileged students within local school districts.
With this kind of commitment and dedication to relationship building, growth is coming naturally for Emerald. “As long as we keep networking and keep our current customer accounts highly satisfied, the rest will follow,” assures Perrin.
After just three years in business, Emerald Green Building Services has already made a name in Green-Guard-certified cleaning and improved indoor environments, spurred by a mission to create a healthy community.
