General contracting firm finds success through attention to detail

In the past five years, Denver Design-Build LLC has established itself as a premier general contractor of the Western U.S. Located in Denver, Denver Design-Build is devoted to building dream homes and commercial spaces throughout the state of Colorado. By listening to its clients’ wants and needs, the company has been able to stand out from its competition with its service, quality and attention to detail. Denver Design-Build establishes strong partnerships with each and every homeowner from the inception of the project, through all phases of construction.

Getting started

Founded in 2010 by Jeff Gates and Jeff Ayres, Denver Design-Build was conceived through the notion that there was a lack of quality construction at a fair price in the local market. Ayres and Gates both previously owned their own respective contracting firms and agreed that by conjoining the two companies, the quality and experience from both sides would amount to the ability to provide superior products for clients. “Our offices were next to each other,” says Gates. “We were using a lot of the same subs and vendors, so we decided that it would be beneficial to team up and create a new entity and that was the start of Denver Design-Build.”Denver Design-Build LLC

Starting a new construction company in the midst of a recession did not come without its challenges. Denver Design-Build began building its portfolio with small renovation jobs. By remaining consistent and disciplined, Denver Design-Build has been able to grow steadily every year since its inception. The company has increased its staff from two people: Ayres and Gates, to its current staff of 26 people. On a regular basis, the company has approximately eight new-construction jobs and four remodel projects concurrently under construction.

As Denver Design-Build has grown, the company has found a niche in the residential market building custom homes and completing remodel jobs. Approximately 80 percent of the company’s work is in the residential market and the remaining 20 percent is in the commercial sector. “We do a lot of different types of projects in the residential market,” says Ayres. “We do custom houses, duplexes and multifamily buildings. In the commercial sector we do a lot of work for sports and entertainment venues, such as Bluebird Theater and Sports Authority Field at Mile High, which is where the Denver Broncos play.”

At Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver Design-Build has performed numerous, small-scale jobs for the facility. The company has completed office spaces and security rooms, and also remodeled bathrooms at the stadium. “They tend to be some of the smaller $15,000 to $20,000 jobs, but we do a lot of them,” Gates explains. “They’re fun projects, though, and it’s great to be involved with the stadium.”

A notable project that Denver Design-Build recently completed was a new-build, midcentury-modern design house. The 3,600-square-foot ranchstyle home contained some exquisite architecture as well as a finished basement and detailed landscaping. “We’ve received a lot of praise from the neighborhood about this project,” says Ayres. “With its architectural features, the home really stands out.”

Building relationships

As a general contractor, Denver Design-Build turns to its strong network of subcontractors to perform a majority of the construction work. The company does, however, self-perform a fair amount of the interior carpentry for many of its projects. “General labor, construction management and interior carpentry are what we perform in-house,” says Gates. “Everything else is subbed out.”

Gates says that one reason for the success of Denver Design-Build is the fact that he and Ayres both enjoy what  they do and love to see the success of their employees. A rewarding factor for Gates is the opportunity to drive through a neighborhood where the company has worked and see the completed projects that Denver Design-Build has been involved in. “We work hard and it pays off,” he adds. “We have a great group of employees and I think they all appreciate the opportunity they have to be a part of building something that they can drive by and see every day.”

In its five years of operation, Denver Design-Build has created a work environment that has helped the company to maintain strong employee retention. Ayres says that the company encourages professional and personal growth in all of its workers. “We like to see people gain new skills and work their way up in the company,” he says. “We have many employees that started off as $9-per-hour laborers and are now $20-per-hour carpenters.”

Denver Design-Build is currently helping to design an eight-story, high-rise residential building as well as a 17-unit town home, both of which will be built in 2016. As a well-established construction firm in Colorado, Denver Design-Build LLC manages its growth while remaining dedicated to the service, quality and attention to detail that have built the company’s strong reputation.
