Custom Quality Door & Trim Inc. (Custom) is a California-based specialty finish carpentry contractor in Corona. Shawn Hughes, president and CEO of Custom, is a third-generation owner of the family-run business who has been in the industry for over 40 years. The tradition began when Shawn’s grandfather, Milton Hughes, established H & H Wood Products decades ago. The concept of the Hughes family company remained strong; however, the inception went through several name changes. Michael Hughes, Shawn’s father and CFO of Custom, is still involved in the current inception today, and his history dates back to when the company was known as Custom Quality Millwork.

After several rebranding’s, the team has settled on Custom. Custom’s niche is broad, as the team has worked with several contractors and developers over the years to offer only the finest custom finish carpentry. Shawn regularly keeps four crews for the field, each composed of 10 to 20 carpenters. The office staff of seven keeps the entire ordeal organized and offers an open line of communication to clients. Most of Custom’s projects are in new construction. Commercial and residential work takes up much of the scope, as each project is outfitted with an on-site foreman to guarantee the highest level of quality, as well as strict adherence to clients’ important schedules. The Custom team provides value engineering to offer the most competitive prices on the market.

Serving a Broad Market

“With finish carpentry, everything depends on what the specific project calls for,” Shawn explains. Depending on size and end purpose, specifications can include features like doors and trim, as well as mailboxes, toilet partitions and anything else the contractor requires. Specific product installations include frames, doors, fire glass, architectural doors, hardware and specialty items. Inventory is kept at the company’s 18,000-square foot warehouse in Corona with easy access to major highways that connect the business to its project sites.

The company provides material and labor for Division 6, Division 8 and Division 10 construction. According to Shawn, the company is always ready to go out of its way to better serve the customer. Upon request, Custom can provide everything from fire rated attic access doors to hand dryers for a wide variety of projects. Whether a client is looking for tenant improvements or quality finish carpentry for a new apartment building, Custom is prepared and capable.

A Growing Portfolio

Shawn and his team are constantly picking up new projects, often under repeat general contractors, as many of the company’s recent projects have been apartment buildings. The carpenters finished up work on Cielo at Playa Vista, a development of luxury townhomes, in early 2012. The homes embrace simple, streamlined architectural elements and Custom’s work on the project was designed to complement the contemporary styling with dark wood cabinetry and sleek accents like minimalistic handrails and modern mantels.

Custom is also working on the Paseo Verde Apartment Homes in Fontanta. The project is under construction and in its third phase. When the residences are completed, two- and three-bedroom apartment homes will be available in a family-focused, affordable neighborhood. The company has also completed several projects on single-family residences for Lennar Homes and Taylor Morrison. Other projects include low-income housing for local housing authorities, condos, mixed-income development projects and more.

On the commercial end of business, Custom works consistently with area general contractors on a variety of finish carpentry applications. Repeat business partners include Irvine Companies and the Amcal Companies, as both serve a host of retail, medical and other commercial businesses. Custom is often subcontracted to do renovations and tenant improvements for big-name clients including Walmart, Sizzler and Enterprise.

The team at Custom has received high praise from the contractors it works with, as the team’s ability to build lasting, positive relationships is an important part of garnering new business. Custom has worked with the Advent Companies on several projects, and Advent’s vice president has personally referred many clients and business associates to the subcontractor. Of highest value to potential clients are Custom’s dedication to quality and the team’s shared eye for detail.

Shawn and the team have the experience and foresight to avoid potential obstacles and setbacks through detailed planning and strong lines of communication. The entire crew is dedicated and efficient, moving projects along within required time frames for contractors and clients, while utilizing every resource available to secure a final product that exceeds client expectations. Contractors like Advent trust the relationships they have built with Custom. Shawn and the team deliver on promises and are readily available to confront problems along the way.

Custom continues its dedication to safety and service even in times of economic uncertainty. Shawn admits the business has had to streamline, but so far he has maintained his company’s manpower, as well as its important relationships with customers and suppliers alike. Custom Quality Door & Trim Inc. is building a presence in finish carpentry that, like each classic project, is built to last.
