Central Cooling and Heating Inc. (CCH) is the Greater Boston Area’s top installer and servicer of residential environmental comfort products. The company has been operating since 1966; founded by Doug Hamilton Sr. The first office was in Doug Sr.’s basement, out of which he installed his first humidifier in a home in Lynn, Mass., for $35. Three years later, CCH moved out of the basement and has continued to grow ever since.

Today CCH employs over 100 people. Doug Sr. retired in 2000 and the company is now owned and run by his two sons, Doug Jr. and Darren, and a partner, Ed Pollack. CCH offers products and installation of the industry’s top brands and has partnerships with the likes of Carrier, Mitsubishi and Lochinvar. While the company exclusively sells the top names in comfort systems, CCH’s technicians service all makes and models of heating and cooling products.

The company’s relationships with its suppliers are one of the biggest components of CCH’s success in the market. The business was awarded Local Dealer of the Year by Carrier in 2012. “We’ve received an award from them 20 years in a row,” says Darren. Additionally, CCH is a Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer, the manufacturer’s highest classification of distribution partners.

Comfy Customers

CCH’s relationships with its customers are even more important than its relationships with its partners. The company displays a collection of high praises on its website, lauding the business and its technicians for efficient, courteous service. Customers can expect the best in customized service from help choosing the most efficient systems to installation that accounts for space and aesthetics in a client’s home.

Darren’s team is highly trained and experienced. The company offers a wide range of services and many of CCH’s installations are retrofits of homes built without comfort systems. “We go into homes and change over heating and air conditioning systems,” says Darren. The company is a member of Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), which allows the team to perform Energy Star rated and high performance installations.

CCH is ahead of the curve with green technologies and has installed systems that affect huge energy savings for homeowners. “A customer who has a house in Lexington wanted geothermal and we gave him a quote for that,” says Darren who adds that the company is seeing an increase in this technology in the residential sector. “We installed two inverter pumps and solar hot water heating on the roof. We saved them 40 percent.”

Geothermal systems are expensive; however Darren says the industry is making strides towards more affordable solutions. “Geothermal allows you to use the earth to get heat to your house,” Darren explains. “There are lots of different technologies available, one of the newest is a system with variable capacity called inverter systems. They’re able to operate at a much lower capacity when you don’t need full capacity. In the near future the technology is heading towards these inverter type systems at about half the price of the standard systems.”

Highly Evolved Resolve

CCH runs into challenging projects often. Darren chalks it up to being a high-volume business. The team is well-prepared to handle any difficult installation with fully trained and certified technicians and a fleet of 16 company vehicles stocked with diagnostic, maintenance and repair tools. CCH takes care of all the work from staying up to date on codes and obtaining all proper permits for homeowners to performing full inspections and assessments before installation begins. This preparatory process keeps an installation running smoothly and allows technicians to anticipate potential obstacles.

All duct work is custom designed and installed by the professionals at CCH. The company uses only steel ducts which the company manufactures at its facilities. In 2011 Massachusetts’ state legislature passed a bill requiring all sheet metal workers to be fully licensed. “It’s created some turmoil in the industry,” says Darren, “But we’ve been proactive about the changes.” He adds that the company and its technicians are perpetually in training mode to stay at the forefront of new technologies and best practices.

Right now the company is not looking for physical growth, but continues to expand its products and services, especially those that promote energy efficiency. “We’re going through a lot of changes related to efficiency and home performance,” explains Darren. To maintain the best energy performance, ongoing care maintenance plans are available and CCH representatives walk clients through the plan selection process. Outside of preventative maintenance, CCH’s technicians are available 24 hours per day, seven days per week in case of emergencies.

CCH is a family-owned and -operated business and part of the business’ philosophy is to treat customers as part of that family. The company’s team of designers, installation mechanics, service technicians and customer service representatives are committed to fast and professional response whether in the design phase or in the case of an emergency. In efficiency, value and professional courtesy, Central Cooling & Heating Inc. is the region’s best in the heating and cooling business.
