Canyon Construction – also known as Avant Canyon Group – is a leading building and remodeling contractor based in Moraga, Calif., and founded by Deva Rajan in 1966. With more than 45 years in the industry, Canyon Construction offers experience and diverse capabilities to commercial and residential customers alike. The company offers custom construction and renovation solutions with a green edge for a wide range of applications in the Bay Area.
“We offer general contracting and construction management services,” explains Chris Avant, president of Canyon Construction. “We aim to focus on sustainable remodeling, historical restorations and custom home projects.”
Experienced Executives and Client-focused Management
Canyon Construction’s executive team leads a core group of 50 employees who excel in the estimating and management components of construction. The company’s foremen oversee projects independently, meaning that partners, subcontractors and clients alike can rely on a single point of contact. The company’s project managers prioritize maintaining relationships with subcontractors and clients, while also focusing on keeping all parties informed well and on track throughout each project.
Canyon Construction oversees projects large and small with the help of the company’s project managers’ decades of experience in the industry. From traditional home renovations to large commercial projects, Canyon Construction’s managers and foremen work with clients and architects to develop a construction plan that suits budgets and time frames. Over the years, clients have come to rely on Canyon Construction for an unmatched understanding of methods, materials, codes and green building practices.
To keep projects on track and ensure all parties working on different components of the project are running along the same course, Canyon Construction holds weekly and biweekly meetings with project managers, superintendents and estimating staff. Canyon Construction also utilizes the latest in cloud-based management software, which allows the process to be accessible and transparent to all parties.
Before breaking ground on any project, the team puts together a strict plan for completion. Canyon Construction’s plans include three key components of a successful job: managing construction costs, scheduling and quality control. The team members utilize past experience, as well as the latest, most-efficient technology available today. Regardless of the size or scope of a project, the team guarantees adherence to both schedule and budget.
The company’s portfolio is constantly expanding to include innovative and complex projects around the region. In result, Canyon Construction has earned a reputation for high-quality contemporary and traditional homes that utilize green building methods, materials and technology. Top Bay Area architects team up with the team at Canyon Construction early on to design challenging and inspiring structures.
Impressive Portfolio Boasting LEED Platinum Headquarters
Canyon Construction’s success and portfolio is deeply rooted. Two of the company’s most memorable projects are historical restorations. One impressive project is Fort Ross, a historic Russian settlement established in 1812, which sits along a stretch of the Pacific Ocean. “We performed a full restoration of the fort in the 1978,” says Avant. “It’s the oldest timber frame building west of the Mississippi.” The main subject of restoration and focal point of the Fort Ross Conservancy is an old wooden chapel built in 1825. Years of exposure to the elements had left the structure weathered and structurally unsound. Rajan calls the project “a labor of love.”
Even closer to the hearts of the Canyon Construction team is the Moraga Barn. Built in 1912, the barn is the oldest structure in the city of Moraga. “We renovated the building to become our headquarters in 2006,” details Avant. “We utilized integrated solar, geothermal and a rainwater catchment system. We used salvaged and sustainably harvested materials and we’ve achieved optimum indoor air quality.”
With the help of Bay Area green building leaders, the historic restoration achieved the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Platinum certification. The Moraga Barn stands as an example of the company’s green capabilities, as a model for sustainable, healthy and efficient construction.
The team furthers the green building business by participating in organizations that promote sustainable construction. Avant hosts and leads green building educational and networking events, as well. With green building rising as a necessity in the industry, Canyon Construction is indeed ahead of the game, working diligently to offer environmentally conscious, quality projects.
