In 2001 Joe Byrom and Steve Davey founded Byrom-Davey Inc. (BDI). “We’ve been in business for over 12 years now,” says Davey, president and CEO of BDI. “The goal was to formulate our company to construct synthetic turf fields and tracks. In our first year we did one school with synthetic turf field and track, as well as some parks and street work. The following year we did six fields, and from there the synthetic turf fields and tracks grew in opportunities after that. Over the past 12 years, we have done over 240 various sports projects, which include complete stadium construction with bleachers, lighting, restrooms and concession auxiliary buildings.”
BDI now has approximately 50 employees, with many boasting over 30 years of experience. The company’s valued employees include Paul Pankow, vice president of operations; Eric Jennings Sr., vice president of business development; and Jo Ann Caspersen, senior account executive; as well as BDI’s professional engineers, superintendents, project managers and project associates.
Davey has over 30 years of industry experience, as well. “I attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and graduated in civil engineering,” says Davey. “After college, I relocated to San Diego and worked for another company. After 15 years I decided to venture out on my own.”
The skilled team at BDI has built a portfolio of impressive projects, ranging from small-scale replacements to entire stadium projects. BDI offers several project delivery methods for clients, including Lease Leaseback, design-build and design-bid-build with pre-construction services through construction management and project closeout. At BDI, the mission statement and performance goal for each project is total customer satisfaction with completion on time and on budget without compromising quality.
Refined Execution
The BDI team performs work in Southern California and the state’s Central Coast. “We have licenses in Nevada and Utah, but their market areas are currently recovering and should have our specific type work in the near future,” states Davey. “Our main office is in San Diego and we have a satellite office in Fontana, Calif.”
Much of the work performed by the BDI team is for public and private schools. “Our team understands the significance of new improvement facilities in assisting schools to build a successful program,” says Davey. “These projects have a positive long-term effect on community members at all levels, including coaches, athletes, administrators and students.” Due to BDI’s continued success, clients have come to count on the team for a proven dedication to safety and long-lasting sports facilities.
“We specialize in construction of synthetic track surfaces and synthetic turf fields for football, baseball, lacrosse and soccer,” says Davey. “We do construct complete stadiums and partner with bleacher, lighting and specialty construction companies. We demolish the old field and track to construct a new system. The same is accomplished with the lighting and the bleachers. We self-perform a majority of our own work. We perform our own grading, drainage, concrete, demolition and installation of all the sports venues. We subcontract asphalt paving, track surfacing and synthetic turf. We have several preferred electrical contractors we use to install the Musco lighting system and we use southern bleachers for the stadium bleachers.”
Focused on quality, BDI is involved with dynamic design aspects. “Our team can layout the anticipated drainage, cooling system and grading aspects of a project to assist architects and engineers program their design documents,” Davey explains. “We just completed Cromwell track and field on the University of Southern California. Other projects include a new synthetic turf field [Fieldturf] for Fresno State’s football field. There was an existing grass field and we removed the existing grass field and install a complete new drainage system along with the new synthetic turf [Fieldturf]. That took about three months.”
BDI has also constructed stadiums for John Burroughs High School in Burbank, University of California in Santa Barbara, Yorba Linda High School Stadium, Don Lugo High School, as well as a practice facility for the San Diego Chargers. Davey adds that stadium projects generally take eight to 10 months to complete.
Rooting for the Home Team
Especially in the recent slow economy, business is not always easy, and BDI has faced several challenges over the years. “We have a growing number of competitors in the industry who are challenging us in the current market areas for the same type of work we have been accustomed to servicing,” Davey explains. “We are the home team for this type of work and that current and potential customers will continue to call on us to give them value-added projects and a great product.”
BDI’s corporate philosophy, “A company of Doers,” has fueled the team to steady success. “Honesty and integrity are the keys of our company,” Davey elaborates. “That is why we are still in business. We do things right.”
Doing business well continues to be defined by building fortified relationships with clients and proving to deliver programs within time, scope and budget. Often working with subcontractors, BDI knows how important it is to have the right team for the job. “We have a list of qualified subcontractors who are top performers in their specialty,” Davey explains. “We prefer to use them as much as possible from job to job.”
BDI looks to get repeat business from its customers by continuing to employ high-performing subcontractors and keeping experienced staff that can service site and building improvements and installations. “In the foreseeable future we would like to sustain a consistent level of work to keep our team members busy and productive to support themselves and family,” explains Davey. “We know our limits. We have a good formula and no reason to accept more work that we can control. Byrom-Davey Inc. has a solid handle on quality control, and will continue to offer reliable construction services to the public and private customers across the region.
