Founded in 1977, Building Erection Services Co. (BES) has earned a reputation for quality and excellence. Based on the essential principles of honesty, hard work and commitment, this Kansas City, Missouri-based steel erection firm attracted Tim Olah, who built his own thriving steel fabrication company based on the same standards. “You get out of a project what you put into it,” says Olah. “Our team of experts offers considerable longevity, so they know well the high level of quality that we are known for.”

A second-generation union ironworker, Olah understands both the fabrication and field side of a project. In 2011, BES joined forces with Olah’s Kansas City Structural Steel. Both companies work (separately and together, depending on the job) to bring those common-sense values to life every day for the benefit of clients.

The BES team is equipped with years of experience, which means that finding the most efficient, smartest and safest way to do things has become second nature. “My philosophy is pretty simple,” says Olah. “If you place qualified people in management and field personnel and give them the tools they need, they will be successful. I believe that if you invest in the best tools and equipment, you let your team achieve a higher level of quality and efficiency with every job. If you work with junk you end up building junk. We build with quality across the board, which in turns delivers quality to our clients.”

Up to the challenge

BES works primarily in heavy industrial and commercial industries and is able to handle any job that its clients put on the table. BES is an AISC advanced steel erector, which means the company is qualified to handle the most advanced steel erection services in the industry. BES’ crews include estimators, superintendents and erectors that specialize in every service area and have worked on projects of all sizes, scopes and complexities.

In addition to steel erection, BES also works in precast erection services, prefabricated metal buildings and miscellaneous metal. Industries the company typically works in include automotive, civic, commercial, education, health care, industrial, retail sports and transportation.

As the driving success of the company, Olah says that the talented and hardworking employees of BES are the most valuable asset to the company. With 68 people working in the company’s fabrication shop and another 180 in field, BES maintains a philosophy of safety being the top priority. “Our high-level AISC certification reflects our commitment to safety,” Olah explains. “We’ve developed and battle-tested plans and training programs that work and our safety record shows it.”

With its strong reputation and immaculate safety record, BES has gained some high-profile clients. Known for completing complex structures, the company has been involved in the rebuild of Royals Stadium in Kansas City and a 15,000-seat stadium in Evansville, Missouri. “One of the most interesting projects we’ve done was last year at the Mars Candy plant in Topeka, Kansas,” recalls Olah. “It covered the entire spectrum of structural erection.” The $100 million, 500,000-square-foot facility was completed in 2014 and is the first new Mars site built in North America in the past 35 years.

With BES experiencing exponential growth in such a relatively short period of time, Olah plans to remain on the same path. Having recently purchased 70 acres of land, he plans to expand the company’s fabrication shop.
