Gene and Randy Judd founded Bone Dry Roofing (Bone Dry) in 1989 with just a handful of employees and a healthy dose of ambition. “We started as a very small organization in one Indianapolis location,” recalls Gene, owner of Bone Dry. “During the past 24 years we’ve grown to be a very successful company with over 150 employees in offices across six states. Despite Bone Dry’s growth, our philosophy has remained constant over the years. Our mission is, and has always been to ensure peace of mind for each and every customer.”

The family-owned and -operated company is more than what its name leads onto. “We’re much more than just a roofing company,” explains Adam Whitaker, director of marketing and brand management at Bone Dry. “We also do interior and exterior painting, masonry, insulation, ventilation, gutter and siding work, basically anything when it comes to home improvement.”

Bone Dry is one of the largest residential roofing companies in the Midwest, covering Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee with 11 offices. “We have a highly trained service staff of 150 people,” details Adam. “We’re not salespeople. We don’t try to push anything onto our customers, but we will go out of our way to explain who we are and what we’re about.”

Long-term Customer Commitment

Part of serving the Midwest is dealing with extreme weather, from tornadoes to massive hail storms. Adam admits the weather is often on Bone Dry’s side. “We’re growing pretty fast,” he says. “Part of our growth spurt is thanks to a lot of storm work prevention and repair. However, we’re not one of those storm-chasing companies that come in and undercut prices after a storm and then leave. We have a 10-year workmanship warranty on all of our installations. If something does go wrong, we’ll be around to fix it.”

“We differentiate ourselves by having physical offices in each of the areas we serve, because we’re here to stay,” reiterates Gene. “We’re able to respond to heavy storms in certain areas by pulling manpower and resources from other offices. If our customers have an emergency, we’re here, even in the middle of the night.” Bone Dry’s customer service is so exceptional that it has earned the company several awards, including an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Additionally, the company won multiple Super Service awards from Angie’s List, including in 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, as well as in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

More than a Few Shingles

The company focuses on providing quality roofing systems as a whole unit. “Roofing is more than the shingles,” explains Adam. “A whole system involves proper insulation, ventilation and the necessary gutter, siding, painting and masonry work that goes along with it.”

Bone Dry doesn’t believe in taking short-cuts. “What sets us apart is our long-term commitment to our customers, backed by unsurpassed craftsmanship and service,” Adam says. “For one, we hand nail our roofs while other companies use nail guns because it’s faster and easier. It also compromises the quality of the installation. Improper pressure or nail placement can void the shingle manufacturer’s warranty.”

Although most of Bone Dry’s installations are in the residential sector, the company also has a commercial roofing division. “We’re currently working on a very large apartment complex in Indianapolis,” details Adam. “We also work with the local communities we’re positioned in through Habitat for Humanity donations and assistance programs on a regular basis. Bone Dry was even featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition three years ago, which was really exciting.”

Bone Dry continues to strive for the best customer service in the business. “We’re always working on our internal processes and training to find ways to consistently serve our customers,” says Gene. “Whether it’s upgrading technology or providing tools to our employees that allow them to maintain quality service, our customers are what help us grow.”

Gene reveals further expansion is on the horizon for Bone Dry. “As of January 2013, we’ve added a new office in Tulsa, Okla. And Oklahoma City,” he shares. “Over the next few years, we anticipate opening additional offices in new sates. Our masonry division is also launching a new service in foundation repair.”

While Bone Dry continues to develop into one of the most successful full-service roofers in the Midwest, Gene stresses the company’s goal is to, each day, remember its roots. “We’ve maintained family ownership,” Gene adds. “We stress quality installation, customer satisfaction and a quality work environment for our employees.” Bone Dry Roofing provides exceptional installation and round-the-clock service that equals peace of mind as sound as the roof overhead.
