Bingham Mechanical Inc. (Bingham) opened its doors in 1983 as a small commercial contractor in Idaho Falls, Idaho. For over 30 years, the business has grown steadily, offering services to contractors and commercial clients small and large. Jason Olson, vice president of Bingham, has been with the business since 1997. “It’s a family-owned business,” he explains. “We have 13 employees working on hospitals, schools and public works projects.”
Bingham maintains an Unlimited Idaho Public Works License that, combined with the team’s broad capabilities and high bonding capacity, allows the business to pick up some of the largest projects in the region. Between the company’s wide assortment of resources and strong relationships with clients, suppliers and subcontractors, Bingham has easily become a market leader in southeastern Idaho.
Projects and Services
The staff at Bingham includes several licensed journeyman plumbers, pipe fitters and welders as well as certified medical gas installers. With hundreds of years of combined experience, the team performs a scope of work that includes sewer, water, storm drain, gas piping, steam and condensate plumbing, boilers and chillers. The business self performs about 65 percent of the work on projects. For work outside of the business’ scope, Bingham relies on a network of skilled subcontractors. “Our relationships with subs and suppliers are very important,” Olson explains. “We work with many local subs, including HVAC contractors and temperature control specialists.” These subs allow Bingham to offer full-service solutions to businesses or contractors for all plumbing, HVAC and mechanical needs.
The business has been occupied with several major projects over the last few years. Recent customers include hospitals, public and private schools, retailers, restaurants, offices, banks, assisted living facilities, manufacturers and sewage treatment plants. “We finished up a project at the Idaho National Laboratory last year,” says Olson. “That was a complex project for the U.S. Department of Energy. We have also broken ground on another research and education lab in the region.”
Market Management
Many contractors have suffered throughout the recession, and Olson admits his team has felt the effects. “We had to downsize,” he explains. Despite the hardships, the Bingham team has grown internally from these challenges. The business has become more streamlined, and running lean allows the business to focus on aggressive bidding. “Things are improving in Idaho,” he continues. “We have definitely seen growth compared to when we felt we had hit the bottom. Things are looking up, and we foresee growing margins over the next few years.”
With the business’ return to growth, Olson’s team is ready to grow again. “Our focus right now is bringing in more business and keeping our core employees busy,” says Olson. Lately, the team has been busy. Olson notes that his crew is the most valuable part of the business. “Labor is our biggest expense,” he notes, “But it is well worth it.” Many of his employees have been with the company from the start. The business maintains an unparalleled safety program that involves everyone on staff. The crew’s dedication to safety and craftsmanship repeatedly contributes to successful projects.
Bingham has garnered a lasting reputation in the business. The team offers dependability in all aspects, a quality that has helped build a strong network around the company. The business stands by a motto that no job is too big or too small by providing consistent quality on every site. Bingham Mechanical Inc. will continue to grow while offering leading service in southeastern Idaho.
