With more homeowners looking create additional living space in their homes, many turn to home improvement specialists at The Basement Doctor. For more than 75 years The Basement Doctor has been the leading provider of basement finishing, waterproofing foundation repair and crawl space inspection services in the Midwest. Headquartered in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, The Basement Doctor also maintains eight different franchised offices throughout Ohio and numerous locations throughout the country.
Founded in 1939 as J&D Home Improvement by Joe and Delores Ballantine in Pittsburgh, The Basement Doctor established itself as The Basement Doctor in its Ohio headquarters in 1992. As a home improvement company, The Basement Doctor started out completing home additions, sidings, windows and some waterproofing. “We started to find that more and more people were calling us for waterproofing services and that really became sort of the niche aspect of the business,” says Ron Greenbaum, owner of the Basement Doctor. “Anything that our customers have needed over the years, we have found a way to do it.”
An innovative leader of the industry
The Basement Doctor’s basement finishing and remodeling division is committed to providing a dry and mold-free environment, which creates a healthier living environment for residents. This service also increases energy efficiency of the home. With an insulation system that boasts a value of R16 — one of the best ratings for wall insulation — homeowners are able to see a savings of 33 percent or more on heating and cooling costs. “We’ve been able to use our expertise to innovate all of the ways to fix basements and how to give people a dryer, cleaner, healthier and more energy-efficient home,” says Greenbaum.
Crawl space encapsulation is rapidly becoming the perfect solution for homeowners living with a nasty, dirty and wet crawl space. The Basement Doctor’s method of encapsulating a crawl space includes sealing the area with a heavy-duty vapor barrier called White Cap. This plastic liner is available in two heavy-duty thicknesses and fully protects the crawl space from exterior elements of nature. In order for the crawl space to remain as energy efficient as possible and free of moisture and mold, The Basement Doctor provides the option of adding spray foam insulation as well as a crawl space dehumidifier. Both products have been proven to ensure that each living space remains energy efficient and contains healthy, odorless air.
In one recent example, The Basement Doctor was contacted when the resident noticed a foul odor emanating from their crawl space. The homeowner was experiencing complications with allergies and headaches as a result of the issues in the crawl space and was concerned about the potential for mold and further health problems.
Upon inspection of the home, The Basement Doctor discovered several issues that needed to be addressed. A new down spout was added to the exterior of the home to deliver the water away from the foundation of the house as well as additional connections to the sump pump so that it could successfully manage the water entering the home. The mold and mildew that was present was due to water leaking into the crawl space, which The Basement Doctor sealed and encapsulated with the company’s White Cap vapor barrier preventing the intrusion of water and therefore stopping growth of unhealthy mold and mildew.
“There was a high level of urgency to provide them with a healthier living space, due to the health issues she was experiencing,” says Greenbaum. “Understanding that more than 50 percent of the air she was breathing was originating from that crawl space bothered me personally but I knew we had the right solution.”
With more than 30 years of experience in the basement waterproofing and foundation repair industry, Greenbaum has helped to build and grow The Basement Doctor into successful brand that it has become. Prior to partnering with Tom Johnston and creating the brand, Greenbaum was vice president of sales and marketing for a waterbed retailer as well as co-owner of a music production company. In 2006, Greenbaum was named one of Columbus CEO magazine’s 15 Business Superstars and was also recognized by SmartCEO magazine’s 100 Best Run Companies edition in 2012.
Awards The Basement Doctor has received include the Integrity Award by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Center of Character Ethics, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Ace Award for Achievement in Consumer Excellence and from 1999 to 2008 the company won the Consumer’s Choice Award for business excellence. With its philosophy and history of providing complete customer satisfaction, The Basement Doctor will continue to be a leader in the Greater Columbus home improvement industry.
